DRL Off
This is the roundabout way of saying, "Release the parking brake, noob!"
Fixed.
Once the brake is released, you cannot turn the DRLs off until cycling the ignition.

Actually, "DRL Off" comes on before I put it in gear with parking brake on - it came up as soon as I started the car. Can't believe that I have not noticed that before in almost 9 years of owning the car. I don't use the parking brake unless on a hill, but seems like I would have seen it sometime in the last 8+ years before now.

I always use the parking brake by holding the brake pedal down before shifting the trans in park and while still holding the brake pedal down applying the parking brake which takes the pressure off of the mounts and trans.
What you're describing is perfectly normal of any car equipped with DRLs. Having dealt with Canadian cars equipped with DRL's for a large chuck of my life, that happens with all DRL equipped cars. When you start the car with the handbrake engaged, the DRL's are off until you release it.
Side note, I agree with 007 on this one...

I always do this with every vehicle I've owned. This is a must when parking in an incline/decline.
DRL's have a proven positive safety value. They are not designed for you to see them, it is for others to see you so indirectly they are for YOUR benefit. Disabling them makes as much sense as texting while driving.

Your parking brake is what keeps stress off of your shitty mounts. Brakes are made to stop the car, transmissions are made to shift the car.
