Driver Front Power Window Motor Replacement
Driver Front Power Window Motor Replacement
Hey there -
my driver side window no longer works. I tried resetting the module by running every window button down one at a time and hold 2 seconds and up hold 2 seconds and no dice. I can hear the relay clicking when I push the button so I guessed the window motor is bad. The issue is now that I have it all apart, how do you lower the window to access the bolts which hold the window in the regulator if you can’t move the window??? I read somewhere you cut the cables? I really don’t want to do that as it just stopped out of the blue no warning no slowing down or grinding, so it may not even be the motor,
but if I have to I guess I will.
Thanks,
Andrew

As an update! Getting to the bolts to release the stuck window was not too bad with a 10mm ratcheting open wrench. The issue was that after I installed the new regulator I could not get it to line up with the position of the window as it was so far up. I tested the motor plugged into the door harness but not installed and it did not function. Frustrated, I tried to install the original regulator back in and it would not line up either! I got one bolt in and tried the window reset procedure about 20 times. When it would not work I went to again remove it and realized it was very hot. This indicated it was getting power when I was holding the switch. I got my battery jump box and tried to operate the regulator independent of the switch. I figured which set of wires it was and then activated it and to my surprise.. IT MOVED! I used the same position of wires on the aftermarket regulator and they did not activate the motor. Figuring it was a dud, I tried another set and it moved! It must have been pinned incorrectly from the remanufacturer?? I put the moving oem regulator back in and realized I had to bump the window down a bit to allow the window to drop to be able to bolt it on. It had jammed itself beyond its normal range of travel somehow. I put it together, closed the door up and wham, window functioned perfectly. I did the travel reset procedure and reprogrammed auto up and down and thought it was good. I ran it up and down manually on my drive several times and was pleased. I parked the car and got greedy and ran the window up with auto up. I got in the next day and went to try the window and NOTHING!!!!!
Does anyone have an idea? I am thinking that somehow it is jamming the window into the seal too tightly on auto up and getting in a bind. Maybe it's motor is worn so it cant overcome the bind to reverse? Usually a worn motor will move very slowly or not move at all? This one acts just like the others once unjammed. I am confident that if I removed the regulator the window would be in the same jammed position. I returned the aftermarket regulator to rockauto and have driven again a week or so with no window. OEM wants over $400 and I am not even convinced it is the regulator. Does a window motor normally just travel until it senses resistance and stop? I don't see any microswitches anywhere to limit travel.
Thanks in advance!

Having replaced my driver's window regulator three times, I can assure you that there are indeed duds. The last one I installed has lasted for two years now, and that was simply the generic one they had from AutoZone. The duds were both from RockAuto, typically I don't have problems with their parts, but these regulators were all bad.
I don't think the windows use any limit switches, I'm fairly certain the motors have their own encoders to determine where the window is. They have a safety feature built in such that if a hand is in the window it will sense that resistance and stop or back off.
Best!
