Dealer wanted my '05 back...

...so I complied.

We did an even no-money-changed-hands trade for an '06 and even saved $5 per month on my payments.

I had an '05 purchased some 18 months ago and happened to be at the dealer to get an oil change when the sales mgr approached me and asked me if I wanted to "upgrade" to an '06. I told him I had no desire to trade out of an 18-month old car, even less to absorb the $$ that I would expend in such a trade. He then told me not to "jump to any conclusions" and to hear him out first.

He told me he was bombarded by customers wanting an '05 and that he could sell "dozens" of them if he had them. Said the '06s weren't moving as well because of the '05 being a good "previously owned seller" and that, if the deal went through, he could then sell off his lot an '06 that had a payment due to his bank along with my '05, for which he said he already had a customer. IOW, he would kill 2 birds with one stone and I would have a new '06 w/o spending any money.

So, I started thinking that if I simply exchanged my '05 for a new '06, did not have to spend any out-of-pocket $$, and kept the same payments for an extra 18 months beyond the original finance plan...plus I then realized I would not have to spend appx. $1,000 in new tires for the '05, which had nearly 30K miles, and also would save on the 30K service that was coming up...I decided it was too good a deal to pass up and agreed.

He then asked me what color I wanted and all I had to do was choose it, then turn over the '05 keys for the '06 ones.

Sweet deal! Wonder if my demand in California is enough for my parents to pull off the same kind of deal?

I would have traded it in at the end for another car, most likely another RL. So, I would still have car payments.

I wonder if this bodes well for the RL's resale value in the future. One can only wish....

I'm not so much worried about resale. I sprung for the 100K mile warranty so I most likely will keep the car until then anyway. My experience is that resale numbers tend to level off when a car has that much mileage.
