To Carbon Gray Pearl Owners...

Hello there!

To Carbon Gray Pearl Owners:

I'm still debating between the Carbon Gray or Nighhawk Black color for the RL. For some reason, the black shows the RL to be an elegant car and at the same time a little bit on the sporty and mean looking side.

If you have the Carbon Gray color, are you still happy with your color choice? Or do you wish you went with soemthing else?

Is the Carbon Gray close to being like an Anthracite Metallic on the TL?

Thanks!

My opinion

I have a black 06 and although I love th color on this particular car... I must say that I've seen it in the Carbon Gray and I may have chosen that instead have I seen it before I bought mine. The chrome accents on the RL really help make the Carbon Gray stand out. Also the black shows EVERYTHING. Every little scratch, finger print, speck of dust. I think the Carbon Gray would give you a great look, in a much easier package to care for.
That's just my opinion.

I have the carbon gray with the taupe and really like it. If you choose the CGP, go with dark tinted windows as it makes it look much better.

i think the gray and black are the best looking -- a tough decision. i went with the gray and I'm very happy. i still love the black too (especially if its freshly detailed). i don't think you can go wrong.

Not sure where you live, but I saw a black on the dealer lot after a our famous thunderstorms (carries dust with it). The car looked horrible....but the carbon grey you couldn't really tell it was dirty at all. Love my Carbon Grey/Ebony!

The dark tinted windows option makes it look much better is a matter of opinion. I have CG with Taupe and the car comes with a rear screen and rear side screens. When I have people in the back the screens go down and the view is not restricted by being darker. If you want a darker view then wear sunglasses, they are so much easier to remove than the tint. I personally do not think that the dark pimpmobile look is attractive or functional. Admittedly it may protect your interior but the interior will outlast your ownership duration anyway.

I used to agree with you on this, db, but I became a convert a couple of years ago when I bought a car that the dealer had already tinted.

At first, I figured I would just have them remove it, but I quickly realized how much cooler the tint made these Texas summers, and how the sun no longer made the skin on my arm burn as it beat through the side window. Last but not least, I also realized that I wasn't squinting as much from the glare. I was sold, and we had my wife's car tinted a few weeks later, as well as 3 cars since then. (BTW, she feels a little safer, especially at night, knowing it's harder to tell there's a lone woman in the car.)

I still feel limo tint is ghetto, but here in the sunny Southwest, a reasonable tint is almost a matter of survival.

What type of tint?

Speaking of tint, is there a special kind (material) of tint that is better for the RL? I heard some will interfere with the Nav system. Is there any truth to that?

Thanks!

Yes you want them to use a non-metallic tint.

Interesting comment. I had heard that about black cars in general. Do you find you have to wash your car much more regularly? My friend was in the same predicament between carbon gray and black. Ended up going with the black this past Friday because she didn't like the taupe interior with the carbon gray. I must say that the black on black looks very impressive, should improve with 35% tint. However, as I've said earlier my lakeshore silver stays clean looking for weeks. In fact it's been 2 weeks since I last washed the rl and despite 2 rain showers, car still looks shiny. Small water spots over the hood that are noticeable only up close. My last car, a 2003 350 Z, was silver and also easy to maintain. I hope if I do go black in the future that it won't be a decision I regret.

For the record I was coming back from the driving range Thursday night and saw a brand new white rl on the road, very nice and shiny even at night. Yesterday I was helping my father move a refrigerator and saw a brand new carbon gray rl making a left turn on to the highway. I know my friend got a decent deal on the lease so it must be a year-end clearance of the 2006s to make way for the new 07s. Unlike some others on the forum who bitch about the lackluster sales of the rl, I for one see it as a blessing to have a less common car on the road. Around here, driving a tl or g35 coupse is like owning a honda civic, they are a dime and dozen on the road.

I thought the gps antenna is in the sharkfin on the roof. Why would tint matter if the sensor is outside the car?

The SalsaShark is just for OnStar. The GPS antenna is on the package shelf, the XM antenna is in the high brake light housing.... or vice versa. Regardless, the shark fin is Onstar.

oh didn't know that, my bad. hmmm, maybe that's why my nav system is a little off sometimes, got 35% tint. sometimes a restaurant or home might be 100 feet farther down and the bullseye is already on the navscreen. is there something metallic or reflective in the tint itself that interferes with the gps sensor?

The general 'wisdom' is that metallic tints will interfere with the ability of the GPS satellites' signal to be received by your antenna. That would tend to cause you to lose reception, rather than have location errors.

IOW, it wouldn't tend to show the destination in the wrong place, but would just have trouble figuring out where you are at times.

If you're just 100 feet off (that's like the width of a house lot or less), that's within the margin of error of GPS systems. If your Nav is off a lot more than that, it might need some calibration. BTW, I have to say mine is really "on".
