Busted fog light

Well, yesterday, the inevitable happened. With all the road work going on, one of my fog lights was cleaned out...the nickle sized stone is still in there.

Does anyone know of some way to protect these lights when they aren't in use...perhaps an aftermarket cover of some sort that pops into place? Film coverings are available from several sources, but I don't know if film would have helped in this case. I think I may have to try the film...it would be better than nothing.

A nice wire mesh screen that snaps in place over the fog lights comes to mind...could add a sporty touch to the front end.

Thanks you all for the replies.

From the earlier discussions I've seen here, I wasn't aware that the 3M product was for lights...the discussions centered on hoods and bumpers. The film product I mentioned is available in some of the enthusiast catalogs and is something I would put on the lens myself.

I went to 3M site and there is a 3M "Certified Installer" about 100 miles from here, so I'll give him a call to see about protecting those fog lights...and headlights as well. I'll also call one of those catalog sites to see what exactly they are selling.

I took a better look at the fog light this afternoon and fished out the rock. The rock pulverized the lens...looks like corsely ground sugar inside of the light...quite a pile of it. The lens is completely shattered with a hole blown through where the rock went in.

Some sort of made-to-fit mesh cover would be ideal and could work with this fog light which is behind the front bumper...it would almost be a suitable college art project...instead of snap in, I think a more elegant solution would be some sort of bracket that could slip behind the opening on the bumper and be tightened with something like stainless/brass bolts.

I would prefer something that can be removed when needed...and remember with fondness the Carellos on my old 1965 Volvo 122S...they had covers.

Regarding doing film on the car, I decided against that for my car. Right after I got the RL, I started a thread about protecting the front bumper and film was recommeded. I got some Zaino but due to the high humidity here, I haven't tried that out...plans are to try that on the bumper.

Yes, the 3M Product can be used on lights also to protect them and they do cover them to the $1000 if damaged. I had the film put on my front bumper, hood, fender, mirrors and lights. I also had it put behind the door handles so people with long nails won't scratch the paint behind it. I am considering getting some to put as a door edge guard so if my doors ever hit something else they wont be damaged.

vp911, I did the same. I also added the door edges, the back bumper and instead of installing mud guards they put some film behind the rear wheels. It's holding up pretty good. The zanio products works well with the 3M film.

Does anyone know the dimensions of the fog lights on our RL off the top of their head?

Oval, 3"H x 5"W ?

And, does anyone have any experience with Lamin-X? I'm considering picking up a yellow tinted universal sheet for the RL.
