Bike rack advise for RL

Can someone recommend a good bike rack for the RL.

Is a roof rack better to purchase than the trunk bike rack?
I am traveling to Florida from Boston and wanted something that will hold up well for the long journey.

Much appreciated.

roof or hitch rack. trunk racks run the risk of scratching the paint and possibly denting the trunk esp if you're hauling around a heavy bike.

do you plan on using the rack on a regular basis?

No i don't only when needed. This option is really for getting it to Florida for now and using it sometimes if i go to other bike friendly towns.

jhal had a roof rack. I know Yakima makes one that fits the RL.

Curt makes a hitch for the RL. The rack would be separate. Seems like that would be the more expensive route.

roof rack would be more. the base rack alone is around $300+...add a couple of bike mounts and that's another $250, add a faring for noise ($80).

hitch would be around $200 (from etrailer), hitch rack ($200-300). hitch racks range from as little as $150 to over $450 (platform racks). high end hitch rack is around $350. upside, is that you can take the hitch off the car in less time to take the roof rack off. the roof rack is used by folks that bike all the time. for intermittent transport, i'd go hitch rack. no paint risk, no ding risk, and your MPGs won't suffer nearly as bad as a roof rack. along with other reasons listed above.

i've run numerous roof racks on other cars along with my TL. i currently have a hitch set up on the MDX. MPGs are not affected at all. and i can go into covered garages.

I have the Curt hitch and the hitch rack. Great arrangement. No worries about paint damage, you can carry two bikes at once with no sweat, and you can even open the trunk while carrying the bikes.

I went with the Curt hitch and the Thule T2. 3 bolts, no drilling, a bit of trimming on the plastic tray.

Thule T2 1-1/4". There are lesser priced options, but the weight requirement for DH bikes required their most expensive hitch mounted rack.

Other options: http://www.sicklines.com/reviews/hit...-rack-roundup/

Note: The T2 will not fold up without modification or removal of the wheel carrier.

Curtis hitch 1 1/4" on 2006 RL

I installed the Curtis hitch today.
I cut holes in the rubber trunk grommets for the bolts to fit through. I also cut holes in the plastic shield or cover under the car, but the bolts were too short to mount the hitch easily with the cover on.
It mounted well without the cover.
I suppose I can live without the plastic cover. But maybe there will be more road noise?
Here's the pix.

Did anyone else permanently remove the black plastic cover?
