Best Trip Mileage

Best Trip Mileage
I know there have been many mileage threads, but I just got my best trip mileage ever. Bought new in 2005 and now have 162K miles.
On Thanksgiving trip for a 300 mile stretch I got 27mpg with ave speed of 70 reported on trip computer. This included 2 mountain passes (Siskiyous at 4300 ft and lower pass near Mt Shasta.
Significant difference from previous trips is that I did not go over 80mph (well rarely). I've never averaged over 24 on 200+ mile trips before.

A few months ago I was returning from Colorado to Texas from vacation. Going 80mph with three people and luggage. Averaged 29.9mpg for over 760 miles.

^Yes.
I was happy to take the Legend to Houston for Thanksgiving. I justified it to myself by the ability to get better mileage than the CR-V at 80 mph. To my delight, I-10 got a speed limit increase to 75 mph when Texas realigned the limits this past year. I was between 80-85 on 100% highway and had a 28.9 mpg reading until I hit construction on 45-E, South of Houston. Knowing that the meter can be as much as 1 mpg high, I was very impressed by 28 mpg at those speeds. By the time I made it home, I was in the 25 mpg ball park having gone 85-90 on the way back.
All of this made me think about L's comment about how a Honda is just broken in at its first timing belt change. Legend #1 was a champ for at least 60k miles when I got her at 114k miles. I am beginning to think that optimal gas mileage may not be achieved until after 100k miles.

Not sure what's going on here, but I like it. Took a trip from Dallas to Austin. On the way down, I stopped in Troy (about 120 miles) and averaged 31mpg. Now before anyone says, "downhill" or "wind-at-my-back", I managed 32mpg on the return trip a day later.

not so long ago with the car lowered on tein cst's and on stock wheels, i drove from oxford to south wales (around 120 miles), no rain, no wind, full tank of fuel with one passenger and a little bit of luggage and sat between 70 and 80mph and i managed a 31.1mpg on the way there and a 31.9 on the way back. now with the 20's on (even though they are the exact same weight) the best i managed this weekend doing the same trip was 28mpg but it was raining and heated seats were on etc.... my average combined is around 22-24mpg...but in the uk we run 95-99ron fuel....if that could make a difference.

On topic, You'll also like the mileage of the RL on the trip. My RL made the trip several times and I recall my mileage at 25-26 or so.

Any performance enhancing mods should only help mileage by increasing power output which results in less demand from then engine under identical driving conditions. It is likely that your observation of worse mileage is due to an increase in spirited driving because of your mod. Other possible factors are: your tire pressure decreased with the temperature drop and was not compensated or I suppose it is not impossible the car doesn't like the intake and is holding back power, although that seems least likely.

Wow! I have heard of 'Vettes getting 30 on the highway simply because the rediculous power makes cruising a breeze. I wouldn't think the V would be that much different even with the weight increase. Do you think there is something else going on, or is the 30 mpg in the 'Vette a bit of a fishing story?

That said, there may be an element of fishing stories in the claims

I have a friend with a zo6, we cruising on the highway at 60-80 he was only at ~1500rpms, obviously you step on it that baby moves.
LOL oo7, I was kidding, performance and fuel efficiency should not be talked about in the same thread.
Heavy... That's one ugly shoe haha

This man has great judgement in the shoes he buys J&M I bet.
Gas mileage varies from one end of the state to the other and whether it is summer or winter blend for me in California. If I put in regular, I lose about 1.5-2 mpg averaging around 25-26 mpg. When I put in mid-grade, I get 27-28.5.
I put the car in cruise control mode at 74-75 mph, so I don't get noticed by the local constabulary.

But can he get 30 mpg is the question. Given the torque, drag coefficients, weight, and overall badassness of the car, it seems feasible, but I wouldn't think the V would be THAT much worse.
