Anyone w/ DDM tuning HID kit? Having a lil trouble

Hey all,

I purchased the slim HID kit from DDM tuning along w/ the kit wiring harness for my Fogs and I'm having some problems with it. I called their tech support, but they couldn't help either so I was hoping maybe some of you electric gurus can help out.

The problem I'm having is the passenger side bulb turns on intermittently. I will have to turn the switch off & on then it'll work. Sometimes when I turn on my headlight, both fogs will light up just fine. If I try to turn on my fogs without my engine on, the passenger side will not light up. I know it's some kind of power issue, but can't pinpoint exactly what it is.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

-Bruce

low battery/power or bad power/ground connections.

you paid $50 for a HID kit i would not expect much out of it any way. DDM has horrible customer service and poor quality products. would not surprise me to see a bad bulb or ballast brand new from them it happens a lot

as said it could be a few things like low battery, bad connections, bad ballast, bad bulb, bad igniter.

a bad bulb can cause the ballast to be problematic (random power or flickering).... in the long run killing the ballast.

time consuming, but intermittant problems are the worse to solve.

you can start by swapping the bulbs : problem switches to left --> replace bulb

if problem remains, swap ballasts/igniters : problem switches to left --> replace ballast/igniter

if problem remains to the right, you have a faulty connection (power supply or ground)

did you install the kit yourself ?
if yes, did you splice the wires or is the kit a plug-in install ?
if plug-in type : carefully inspect the terminals in both connectors (oem and HID kit)

also swap the ballast, if the problem follows the ballast then you found your issue.

Thanks for the reply guys.

Yes, I installed the kit myself but it was a simple plug and play. I didn't have to do any kind of wire splicing, just connecting plugs and installing the ground/power supply to battery. I'm going try everything you guys suggested and hopefully I can find the culprit to my problems.

I've got the same DDM fog lights on my '09. They've only been on for two weeks, but no problems so far. I did have to up the fuse size, but that's not your issue.

Good luck!

why did you have to up your fuse size? what size fuse did you put in there and what gauge is the wiring?

I had ddm tuning HID kit in the fogs, same problem shortly after install. It was the ballast I believe. I just took them out and will put in a better quality kit when the time comes.

I had to up the fuse from a 10 to 15amp. It was blowing the fuse occasionally during the initial warm up.

I used the stock wiring and connected it to the included harness adapters.

is it a independent wiring harness that hooks up to the battery with relays. is there 1 or 2 fuses?

IMO if you are blowing the fuse before the relay that might be an issue... if you have a fuse on the hot wire to the relay then upping it isnt a huge issue.

Also check the wire and make sure it isnt getting hot (to the touch)

Yeah, it was the ballast alright. I took some time to take the bumper off and started messing with the kit. I first switched the bulb, but got the same out come. When I switched the ballast the from passenger to driver's side, the problem was clearly the ballast because my driver's side started to act up. I will get a better quality HID kit and install it. Thanks for all the help again.

ballast are generally the same. Save some money and try to find a new one rather than a whole kit.

Ballast are not the same. most are cheap chinese construction with poor quality. there are some companies that make good quality ballast and come with a real warranty and good customer support like TheRetrofitSource.com seems to be the most popular and i have had many great experiences with the company

plugs, power levels, component make up, wiring diagrams, size (unless slim) are all the same.

You are comparing the service and I am comparing the hardware.

All the internal designs are the same until you get into the digital ballast.

all objects that are powered by electricity all have similar components. some ballast are rated at 35W of power and do not produce the rated power. some come in at the rated 35W. then you move onto the newer 50-55W ballast. there are actually some ballast that are able to be modded to produce 100W of power (which is pretty insane BTW).

yep, you are simply changing out diodes and resisters to allow more powah.

At the end of the day the core components generally do not change. Now the attention to detail on the assembly and the warranty services could certainly change.
