Acura Update = Improved Performance
Acura Update = Improved Performance
Took my 05’ RL in for the “update” on 18 Feb 05 for the following four items:
1. Front Door Speakers
2. Driver's Door Control Unit
3. Powertrain Control Module *
4. AcuraLink Control
Well, it may be a figment of my imagination, although I think not, but it seems that after the PCM programming change the “shift dynamics” of my 5 speed automatic transmission also changed! Acceleration seems stronger and shifts are more aggressive, precise, and quicker. Has anyone else noticed this phenomenon?
I’ve owned my RL since Oct 14th 2005, and have 7,600 miles on the odometer so I have a good feel for what should be “normal” so I kid you not, when I say, there is a difference.
* Powertrain Control Module (current programming may cause the engine to stumble the first time you stop before the engine is fully warmed up)

They're trying so hard, and they're so close, but they're not there yet.
I got Acura mail today (yes, in the car!) telling me about the four part fix that this thread discusses. Bravo! The mail allows you to list the dealers closest to you, and also allows you to call your dealer thru the bluetooth connection, with the phone number included with the e-mail. So I selected the "dial the dealer" box to see if it actually selected the right dealer for me. Well, the good news is that the bluetooth worked nicely and the telephone number was dialed. The bad news is that it called a dealer in Mission Viejo (sp?), and I'm in Philly. I wonder how many calls that dealer is going to get from this!
Anyway, it's a good start!

I picked my RL up last night after having 05-006 and the PCM update performed. I don't know if you guys planted the seed in my head, or if it is really happening, but its performance does seem to be somewhat improved. Unfortunately, the rattles that the tech worked on don't seem much better.

Are owners get their notifications for this update based upon VINs or all RL affected ? I checked with my Canadian dealer today, there is nothing on their system about this service bulletin
I called my dealer for an out of order door handle, and was told that my car was affected by 2 needed updates. The general manager did a research based on the VIN. I then called Acura CS because I had not received a notification from Acura, and I was told that the updates were VIN based and I was going to get the letter. The CS rep said that the reason I had not received the notice was because Acura did not want to overwhelm the dealers with all the RL's coming in for updates all at once.
From this I conclude that:
1. The updates were VIN based
2. Not all the affected RL’s needed all four of the updates
3. There could be many RL’s that needed updates, and not all RL owners have been notified

Does anyone know which VIN models were affected? When did the people who took their RL's in buy their cars? I bought mine the beginning of February. And for Acuralink messages, do you need to have the bluetooth phone hooked up to it? The only messages I've been getting are the tips on how to do this and that on the car.
I checked my car and there was nothing in the messages. Also no letter. I did read somewhere that they would do it in small numbers not to overwhelm the dealers.
Small numbers huh? There are not that many out there yet to overwhelm the dealers. I hope I dont need it though. I hate taking the car to the dealer.

Just a word of caution. My car went into dealership for the "update". I comfirmed that every thing was ready before going in. When I pick the car up this afternoon I am told they only replaced the AL module. Nothing else was done as they did not have the software update. I was pretty furious. Nothing else was done. So if you are going in for the update, get your service rep to make sure the software is in for the update.
BTW, can't tell if the new AL module did any good.

Whats' an AL module? I never received the letter or mail in the car. I am not sure if my car will need an upgrade or just get it done at a later time when they are not overwhelming dealers.
The more I think of it, I don't want the upgrade. That's why I bought the Acura was to not visit the dealer.

Check with your dealer to see if they have something for you, and to see if you're registered in the system.

Well, we received the 4 Acura updates for the 05RL but I am wondering whether others of you have noticed whether the MESSAGES (#1 on Information Screen) is still blocked out in terms of color and function. Is it the case, that it only illuminates -- WHEN there is a message waiting?
Posted this earlier but am trying to see if my dealer knows what they are talking about. Is the Power Train Module fix replacing an acutal unit or is it just a software upgrade to the actual unit already there?
Thanks for any thoughts.
BTW, Larry6, I think you willony see the Messages panel illuminated/active when there is a message to read., if I understood your question.

Hi Gator -
FWIW, my dealer indicated it was a software upgrade when I had it done...

Thanks larryka, that is what I am being told as well. But, as you might gather, I don't trust my dealership at all, yet.
BTW, still no dialing POI from the NAV screen with my phone with the new AL link, unless it is a Honda or Acura icon on the screen. Those allow me to call with my phone. Not really sure why I can dial those numbers but not the others. Oh well.

Shotgun and all,
I got the 4-part service update on Wednesday. Sorry, but can't say I notice any performance difference, maybe mine is different than yours.
They also got my "Call" selection in the Address Book and Places working. Weird, but they did it by pairing a phone from the Bluetooth approved list into my HFL choices. Even when the borrowed phone was not in the car the selection worked. When the borrowed phone was upaired the "Call" selection was grayed-out again. I don't know why this was the case but we put the borrowed phone back in the list and so far so good. ?!?!?!?!?!?!?
An attempt was made to remove the rattle from left side dash but didn't work.

How do/did the Cubs do this year?
