Active Noise Cancellation Problem?

Hi,

There is an annoying "rattle" that seems to come from the right hand side of the dashboard of my '08 RL. It comes and goes -- but does not seem to be associated with bumps or other motion of the car. Instead, it seems to be associated with outside noise. So I'm thinking that is has something to do with the ANC. The "rattle" sounds a lot more like static than anything moving around in the car. Anyone have a similar problem?

Thanks!

Perhaps its something in the glovebox or even the cabin air filter thats rattling?

Active noise cancellation is definitely not it.

When I had this issue, it was a couple loose screws at the bottom of the glove box. There are three screws, try tighening all of them.

My '06 has a similar noise. I've tried a number of things -- added some padding to the owner's manual tray, wiggling the underdash "cover" (the padding is starting to disintegrate), tightening screws, and generally jiggling things. Its annoying, but it comes and goes. I can hear it on slightly bumpy roads, and not at all on very bumpy roads. It seems to happen less when the interior of the car is toasty and warm, though.

Try emptying the glove box and owner's manual tray (even remove the tray) and see if you still hear it. The lower cover is pretty loose and could be a source. It comes off pretty easy, but you have to unplug the footwell light.

Are you sure the buzz isn't the mid-woofer located low in the door, there?

you could be right if OP says it sounds more like static. I had this issue in my SUV after my sone borrowed it. He blew the speakers out and I now have lots of static like noise. Can easily verify by turning up the volume.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. I have already checked to be sure that the "rattle" occurs even when the sound system is off which seems to eliminate the sub-woofer as the problem. Will definitely check the glove box screws. But I drove all day today with no issues -- so it seems unlikely that it is something mechanical.
