A6 Maintenance Minder

A6 sporadically pops up between starts. Right now A1 is on so sometimes it would say A16 and sometimes just A1. Manual says check differential and dealer quotes $85. What exactly needs to be done? Can this be done by any mechanic?

Use Acura for almost all maint for many reasons.
