My trip computer said 81 mpg once. I reset it at 60 mph and then coasted to a stop. More details or GTFO.

I think trip A is more accurate.

It's not impossible. with an unloaded car and cruise control on most people should be able to get that and more. I just did a 1075 mile loop through southern Colorado - 60% highway 25% mountain passes and 15% city driving approx and got 27.3 avg for the trip. That included one extremely windy day as well. And the trunk was full of catalogs and samples.

set cruise control on that car and drive for 100 miles on the highway. Your totals will be higher than you think possible. I think these cars get great hwy mpgs. I couldn't be happier.

Great post chicken, BUT did you do that in 18 mins with an average speed of 25mph?

Although you are right, that isnt what we are saying about OPs post.

Do I believe 31.2 mpg is possible in an RL? Sure. If you are going down a gentle slope with the wind at your back and cruise control on 50-55, I don't have a doubt. But like Heavy stated, I don't think that's what happened on the OP's drive home from work in North Jersey.

If you do not have the trip meter set to auto reset on fill-up, the ave speed will only resset when you do a manual reset on the MID

So, 25mph was probably not his average for the elapsed time of 18 minutes

I don't believe these things unless someone has been driving the car on a highway for 20hrs straight and somehow managed to trick the computer trip thingy..

Whatever I try it simply CANNOT go over 19.5mpg... I get on the highway occasionally but that actually keeps me on 19 / 19.5mpg... otherwise I would be on 17/18s

MPG of over 30 although not the norm is certainly attainable. On my most recent trip from Lafayette, LA to Fort Smith, AR I got 32.1 MPG as shown on my trip meter and 31.8 as calculated by gallons top-off to top-off divded into total milage. I should note that this was without tailgating, using air all the trip, without a tailwind or headwind, one passenger, about 80 lbs of luggage, using mainly Chevron 93 octane with no ethanol, tire pressure 37 - 35 F-R, and all synthetic friction fluids. My car is a 2005 RL with 119K. Love my RL.

I forgot to note that the total trip was about 500 miles with over 200 miles of interstate. Drove the speed limit which included about 180 miles of 75 mph on I-49.

The problem is that its an average and its never going to calculate accurately when compared to math.

I do love that a BS pic is getting so much traffic. LoL

FYI I get 22-24 on average

Stupid ethanol...

I have averaged 27 mpgs more than once. It is doable. We have 10% ethanol.

Wow. I've inflated my tires to 36 all around, set the cruise at 75, left the air off, gone the same speed for hours and never beaten 27.

I don't think I could reach 31.2 if I shut down my RL's engine and dropped it out of an airplane. :.)

It all in how you drive it, the RL is a great car BUT it will drink like a college girl if you put your foot down.

75 mph is your problem. Well, my problem too. You need to be between 55-65 to get in the 30s.

Yep this guy has got it right. "Everyone" on c l u b r s x thinks 40MPG is impossible with a RSX-S yet Ive done it a few times.

And the MID is a DREAM_O_METER! Unless you have the entire tank miles/gallons used GTFO.

People will make excuses about their MPG but the problem lies within. We just got 33.8MPG on a trip with 600LBS of cargo in our 2008 tl. 438.9 miles 12.998 gallons.

If you're wondering what happened to your link ^, you can't post competing forum URLs. Just an FYI. Circumventing the filter can result in a ban.

Not to brag or anything but gas prices in Chicago and my frequent trips to downtown in rush hour in my RL were just killing me, not to mention lack of utility... I had to step into something more usable in my situation... Had to part with my RL and get into rx400h
This is driving like i drove RL rushing to work in traffic at about 50-70MPH 80% expressway... In the city only it's even better

As long as we're making irrelevant comparisons of dissimilar vehicles, my bicycle gets even better mileage than that. And it's really really high-tech -- it has a 10-speed manual.

It wasn't 81 in Chicago.

I'm pretty sure my Honda lawnmower gets like 2-15 miles per gallon. I haven't measured my yard yet, but I'm pretty sure that's accurate.

I can get around 27mpg roundtrip from home to work. It's about 100 miles total and around 70% highway with up and downhills. I have a 2006 RL with 65k miles on it... I did notice a slight drop to around 24mpg but after a tank of Techron it seems to have come back up.

Getting 12 city. Girlfriend's car, '2006, 47K miles. Put 1800 miles on it in the last 12 months. She only goes to a few stores and the gym (daily). Short trips.
