2G RL A/C Problems
#83
mine stopped working but as it was still under warranty I took it to the dealer I can look to see they did exactly. I know for sure my clutch went out
#84
Ok it was the clutch and coil in the compressor that was bad so they ordered a clutch set and a coil set and the o rings hope this helps
#85
thx.
I was just looking at the compressor assemly online.. It looks like (to me) that the Clutch, the clutch-solenoid and the field-coil are all part of the compressor. (just from what I see)

AC Issue/problem
So it looks like after replacing the Compressor, Clutch, Stator, etc, etc, the problem is REALLY with the CCM - or Climate Control Module. This is behind the radio. May-be a part to DIY.... Heads up it's $800 from the dealer - so you might find alternate means. (2nd hand or non OEM).

I guess I'll post this here since this is a long running A/C RL thread... So I had similar experience with AC not working. Local mechanic replaced almost everything. Still no worky.
2nd Mechanic looking at it (before my appt at Acura) and found that its the CCM (Climate Control Module) thats the problem. I think this opens the doors to let in cold air/etc... The CCM part is like $800 and its behind the radio. May be doable for a handy DIY. But I at least wanted to pass along to the next person (Before someone decides to replace every part in your A/C system).

Well, there are a few differences. The RL in particular has a lot of tech that has only recently trickled down to other Acuras, and not to Hondas. SH-AWD is the best example, that is not in any Hondas so you'd have to go to an Acura dealership for that. I suppose the AC is another example.

I had the a/c repaired a year or two ago on MY 2005. It was the coil, if I remember correctly. I was out of warranty by a few thousand miles, but the dealer completed the job for no charge. They did an "adjustment" because it was a known problem and I was just out of warranty.
Anyway, I drove the car this weekend (it is my wife's daily driver) and noticed a slight whine, like electrical whine coming from the engine area. I rode in the passenger seat once last week and I remember the sound was more noticeable. It is happens from a stop when accelerating. I turned off the a/c and the noise was gone. I'm sure it is the a/c compressor, or some part therein. Has anyone experienced similar? I read the posts on a/c problems, but could only find total outage, no weird noises.

My guess is that it is the engine fan, which I believe is actually on a clutch type setup.

yes mine is making the same sound now.i have to take mine to the dealer tomorrow for my AC blowing hot air. mine started when i did a hard acceleration and 5 sec later, hot air. after a few hours during startup, the ac was working again. but when ever you put a foot in it, it stops working. now its gone all together. honda purged the syster and refilled as i checked before and it had pressure on the low side but little on the high side. i will used all the info here when i bring mine in tomorrow to the dealer.

All in all, 2010 RL is a great experience for me the next few days. Prev. 2002 rl and now 2005 rl. just put it in for service and 2010 loaner is a nice way to ease the pain of service and AC not working. i will update what the find with that AC issue. 100k service.

Yep, just had the same problem. Ended up being the clutch mechanism that engages the compressor. It was replaced for about $800 at a dealership. It stopped working right before we went on vacation. Local dealership wasn't sure what was wrong so they charged it and it started working again. It stopped working again while on vacation so I was screwed. Had to get it fixed right away at the local dealership in Jacksonville, FL. Told later that if it began blowing hot to turn the car off and start it back and the clutch may engage.

My turn to suffer this - blowing hot air out, just not ALL the time. Came back from lunch and it was working. Parked the car for a movie and came back and hot air again, ugh, and an hour ride home on I-94 in high 80's temps.
First I'm going to try the replace cabin air filter thing, it's long overdue anyways and I get a LOT of leaves and other debris that I'm sure is really clogging up that baby.
After that if it's still fubar'd I'll make an appt with my dealer but be sure to print out and give them the info on the field coil.

'05 Acura RL a/c there, then gone, then back
I took my '05 RL to the dealer last week, 'cause no cold a/c air coming out of the vents. When I got there, it was working fine, and full a/c diagnostic was run and found all was normal. Last night it went out again. This morning it worked fine until I parked briefly, then restarted the engine. I took it back to the dealer here in San Diego today, and they say it's the stator clutch in the a/c compressor that's gone bad and needs replacement. It's 5 years and 4 months old with 48.5k miles. They said the parts had to be ordered and I was told that I would get a break on the repair costs from Acura because of failure so close to expiration of warrranty. I'll update you next week.

A/C compressor field coli replace, does system have to be evacuated?
When replacing the coil on the a/c compressor does the system have to be evacuated? I know on most compressors the seal is held in by the clutch assembly. I have 2006 RL. I have a a bad coil. I want to replace it myself. The service manual does not specify evacuating in the compressor overhaul section. However the diagram shows the compressor removed. Can the coil be replace with the compressor still installed? Any help appreciated. Thanks

Blower Motor???? Does it blow air out the vents at all? If not check for 12V at the connection of the blower motor. If nogo, I'd look at the transistor located under the passenger side next to the firewall.
On my 2003 TL, I also had to replace the wiring harness to the blower motor because it had melted and the wires were shorting the system.

Again with a simple voltage meter, I'd test the relays, voltage coming out of the fuse box, voltage to the blower motor, etc.
You've obviously spent alot of money for this system not to work.
Good luck

Just wanted to clear up some possible confusion. The stator and field coil are one and the same. It is called a field coil in the service manual and a stator when you go to parts department. The clutch assembly includes the stator, pulley, and pressure plate. All of these items come on a new compressor. They can be changed out leaving the actual compressor intact. May clear up some confusion.

I'm having the same issue (2005 RL here). I had the local Acura dealership check it out last time and they said everything seemed to be functioning alright. My issue is that AC will work, but next time I step in the car, it'll blow nothing but hot air.
Naturally whenever I get close to the dealership, it's blowing ice cold air so they think I'm trying to make fools out of them.
Last 2 days it has been insanely hot and I've been getting nothing but super hot air so I think I will take it in one more time.

Mine did the same thing last summer. It's an 05 and they replaced the clutch and everything has been working fine since.
As dwboston mentions above, the Dealership has specific instructions from Acura on how to troubleshoot this problem.

Clutch and coil was replaced! the on and off of the AC is its burning out, causing it to work sometimes as mine did. the compressor cuts off above 4k rpm and as i do a lot of spirited driving didnt help it none. 109k miles and drive it hard on the regular with no other major issues. 2010 rl has more power delivered at lower rpm and it was a nice for 10 days. 10 days b/c they tried hard to get me in a new one!

2005 Acura RL AC Issue
I am helping a friend who has a 2005 Acura RL.
The issue is A/C related. Here is what I found.
A/C in the cabin says AC is on.
A/C clutch will not come on.
Pressures are 50 psig on both sides.
Swapped relays and no change.
Checked all fuses.
Jumpered AC Clutch and the clutch will no engage.
High side switch disconnected and a/c fan will go off.
Any help will be appreciated.

OK guys, 05 RL with 74K miles. All of a sudden overnight, the A/C no longer works. Display says a/c is on but it's just blowing hot air. So you guys say it is the clutch? Man, I have to get me a service manual. Is the clutch something that can be replaced in one day? I do have some mechanical skills or should I leave it to the experts? And, No, I don't have money to leave it to the experts.....

There is a Service announcement from Aug of 2007, that points techs to make sure they check the clutch and the Stator. If you have a meter, you can use the online manual to verify both power to the stator and check the windings for the proper resistance. There have been people that have changed the stator and clutch while its still on the car. Otherwise, you will need to have the system evacuated of freon, and remove the entire compressor assembly. You will need 2 new orings for that reinstallation. Stator and clutch will run you around $300. Compressor will be another $650 if you need to swap that out.

Although it's not outrageously expensive to do this repair yourself if you're able to... Might be worth checking with your dealer first. Happened to me at 65k miles and my dealer was able to goodwill the repair for me. Obviously I wasn't expecting that, so it was a pleasant surprise.
