2009 RL - Can DRL be replaced with HID?

The yellow daytime running lights are pretty boring. I was wondering if HIDs can be used instead.

I know that DRL work on low power in the day and full power when in high beam mode, but would HID agree with that?

Also, I was wondering what size the bulbs are for fogs and DLR as nobody seems to have the info for 09, are they the same as 08?

Thanks in advance

That means the '09's use the same bulbs as the '05's and up.

If the 2009 is the same as 2005-2008, then theoretically, you could retrofit HID ballast and bulbs.

Remember though, that the DRLs are regular 2005 halogen high beams, that are receiving something like 30% power, so you can get the DRL effect without blinding oncoming traffic and traffic you are following.

I do not believe you can run HIDs at low power, it is all or nothing, the tube either gets enough power to discharge, or not.

The 3GTLs used a bi-xenon setup for the low high beams, which calls for a totally different engineering and reflector solution. So do your research well and please let us know what you come up with.

We know that using higher color temperature halogens will not give you a satisfactory result because the DRL circuit only applies low power, so the filament never gets hot enough to give you the proper color temperature.

thats why i went with yellow lumincs halogen bulbs..your next option is to checl out v-leds.com as they have a kit for 9005 drl with led bulbs. the only difference i see with the 09 rl's are the fog lights are using h8 instead of h11

Well, I just got my self an HID set of 9005s for fogs in 5k to match stock and a set of H8's for DRLs which I was told would work by people selling the bulbs...sort of like asking a car dealer if their cars are any good. That I got in 10k, so people can see me in daytime. If it works...nobody would want to get caught in front of me at night, eheh.

Paid $54 each kit shipped on ebay. Will provide update on quality and workability after I get them and get professionally installed.

ETA next weekend.

Link above shows DRL as HB3...I hope I'm wrong or the link is wrong, cause I don't want to end up with H8 that don't fit.

please ignore the rant, HB3 = 9005, I got them confused with H8 for fogs.

Have you tried those? Seems a bit too fishy for me.

I either want to go with modified HIDs (was thinking hooking up fogs that work as daylight and regular fogs, and moding DRLs as high beams only - if my mechanic can figure it out).

Otherwise, I'll just go with regular white looking bulbs.

oh yes, it's real.
I installed them about4 months ago. The difference in brightness is quite amazing, even the low voltage DRL is noticeably brighter. I often drive on narrow country roads with no street lights so the extra light is really appreciated. In the city you probaably wouldn't notice as much but there's no doubt that the effect is genuine.

HIR technology is real, has been used since the late 90's in commercial lighting applications, and work on the exact same principles as described in the website cited by foam4me. They last longer, burn brighter, use less energy (i.e., more efficient--more lumens per watt output, so a 90 watt HIR reflector flood puts out as much or more light as the now defunct 120watt floods).

HIR technology for residential use is usually limited to high end installations because the cost of the bulb is 2-3x standard home depot floods, and typical residential does not call for precise color and beam control. Commercial establishments like HIRs because of the color and beam control, the UV control, and the longer life of 2-3X means a lot less labor in changing of the bulbs, Typically restaurant, retail and public space lighting.

As they get better, CFL and LED are likely to eclipse incandescent technology, fancy dichroic coatings and all.

Well...I've went to a mechanic and I got shot down with the HIDs. Even though the ebay seller sent me some transistors to increase the voltage, all they did was blink. At full power they worked fine...so at this time no DRL HIDs...lame.

Here's the photoshoot.

If anyone has figured out how to use HIDs in DRLs please let me know as I am a bit stuck with a set of 9005's at 10k.
