2009+ Acura RL/ No Ashtrays

Hey,

Today was the first day I sat in the back of my 11 RL Adv. I realized that the car had no ashtrays on the rear doors, my old 05 RL had them. Does any one use the cigar lighter and or the ashtrays in the RL? The 09+ RLs don't have ashtrays, instead there is a phone holder. I don't smoke, and if anyone smoked in my car, I shoot to kill.

05-08 RL/ Cigar Lighter

05-08 RL/ Notice Rear Ashtrays

09-12 RL/ No Ashtray

I never thought of it before, but it is kinda weird to have ashtrays in the backseat area, and none in the front. At least they are consistent now. BTW, congrats on your second RL. When my 06 dies I can't see myself doing anything other than getting another one. It's just impossible to find anything else this refined for the price (especially used).

Thanks Todd,

I was able to snatch the 11 RL Adv. in mid-2013 with only 13,000miles for only 35k. That's 10k of depreciation a year(car was 55k new)! I was about to buy a new 13 Lex GS 350 AWD for 53k, but the RLs value was hard to beat. The dealer thought the car was a tech. package, but really it was adv. So I got a great deal, and the rear spoiler as an incentive. I average about 21/22MPG which is pretty comparable to the GS 350 AWD or Infiniti M37x, I plan to run this car down to 2021. By then the next gen RLX and TLX will be ready, and maybe Lexus will have something in store for me. I want to make this 35k worth while.

Those pockets are actually pull handles that were added once they realized the front door pull handles were mounted too far forward and were breaking off at the door panel. These are actually better to close the door since they are mounted in a more central location considering the weight of the door.

Hah, that's funny, since my doors close automatically, sometimes annoyingly so. I have to yell at anyone that pulls the doors closed because they slam really loud. I don't know about all RL's but my front doors behave like I'm parked uphill at all times. So basically I never pull my handles closed, instead I usually have to hold the door open with my foot, unless I jump out like a ninja, and let it close behind me on its own.

That is actually one of my favorite features, not that it gets used all the time but I totally encourage it when the time calls for it. To me it just says the car was truly meant to be a high end luxury vehicle, and in a high end luxury vehicle you are driven around in rather than actually driving it (think japanese yakuza boss (not actually but the coolest imagery I can think of)). Sitting in the back, smoking a big ol cigar, being a boss. Same goes for the folding headrests and privacy screens. I rarely use these features but for instance I was taking my buddy out to Banff for a night for his stag. 4 of us piled into the car with an overnight bag and clubs and comfortably drove for an hour. One of my buddies smoked so I told him to use the ashtray because they are easy to clean and its just so cool to actually use these features once in a while. And they enjoyed it because it just makes you feel like a boss.

When I was first looking at my RL in 2013, I thought about why don't I save a few thousand on check, and save a little on gas, and buy a 12 TL Advance? But it really came down the superior ride quality, library quiet ride, very smooth power train, and elegant yet stealthy styling.

However, the interior 'boss' features were to good to pass up, power tilt and telescopic steering wheel, genuine wood trim, very comfy seats, 10-way power passenger(TL is 8), power folding mirrors, power and manual sunshades, power folding headrests, very soft suede-like headliner(TL headliner is rough and ugly), and the materials on glove box, dash, under the steering-wheel, and all of doors, are made of very soft touch and padded real leather, wood wheel, wood & leather shifter, and gorgeous blue back-lit gauges. No of this boss shit is on the 12-14 TL Advance.

Nersh, your right ashtrays are real nice, they should have put 'em in the front.

'Boss'... it's a technical term.

But yes! It's all the small details that make this car sooo much better than anything else Acura makes, I rarely use a majority of these features but when I do I appreciate that they're there.

Also I'm a big fan of the dimpled roof/headliner in the rear. I have some tall friends and they really liked it.

Well with 11+ RL it came with the advanced package. Check the specs "Genuine wood trim", I learned this after the fact of buying the RL.

Wow. Well, thanks for pointing that out. Everything presented to date has shown there wasn't any more real wood. It's nice to know that Acura did something right.

Missed my edit window, but it appears 2009 is the only year without any real wood. 2010 had it on the CMBS (a.k.a. Advance for later years). All 2005 and 2006 models had it. 2007 and 2008 had it on the Tech and CMBS trims. I also didn't know that the "wood" wheel wasn't offered on late MY base MMCs.

It's very strange in what Acura has doing lately, the RLX and MDX no longer have real wood. Which is somewhat disappointing. However, the MDX in Canada has a real matte wood finish; 14 MDX in Canada has real wood, oddly enough.

Notice matte not plastic wood on CDN MDX
