2008 rl Price help

Hello,
I was given a quote by one of our dealers in Chicago for 2008 rl tech at $39500K. Is this a good deal?? On top of that :
1. they will also give me a 3400K trade allowance for my '98 toyota rav4 with 96K miles on it.
2. The standard factory twheels on rl will be coated with chrome.
3. Floormats and wheel locks free.

Finance rate is being forwarded to a bank. I'm also considering for 2009 rl tech. What is the best price for this? I got offered at 47K. Please I need help

$39.5k for the 2008 tech (e.g. navi) is a great deal for the Midwest. Take it immediately pending finance rate.

I agree that is great price, especially if it is new / unused. Is it a demo?

But as you may be reading on these threads and in the car biz in general, don't plan on trading out in 2-3 years without expecting to see horrible resale. Its not just the RL, it is impacting most cars in the same class and not just trucks and SUVs.

Same goes for your trade. Just because the online pricing tools suggest retail, trade in or wholesale pricing does not mean a dealer can offer you that. The market is driving pricing down and faster than some of these tools can reflect.

Unless you are willing to sell on your own, the easy comparison is to get a buy price from CarMax, then compare to what the Acura dealer will offer. Keep in mind, even if the dealer is lower, it may save you some tax $$$ to trade at the lower price to make up the difference and conveniance.

And unless you need that $3400 for the RL buy, consider keeping the RAV4 for hauling? I miss my Isuzu for the trips to Sam's Club and the pet trips. I hate using the RL for that!

But if you plan to keep the RL long term, I think it is definately worth it.

I wouldn't trade the Rav4 for 3400 and try to sell it myself; you can get more than that for it..

$3400 for a 1998 Rav4 with 98K miles?? If you need it I would probably take the cash towards the RL on the trade. I wouldn't bother with a private sell, what you'll save in tax will completely offset the extra cash you MIGHT get, plus a lot less headaches associated with selling a vehicle privately. $39.5K for the 08 RL Tech is an amazing price, that's a few grand less than a 09 TL SH-AWD, and about $5K below invoice for the RL Tech!! Grab it!!

Hmm,
Do not know guys - price seems high to me - again judging from my own experience (California).
I have mine 2008 RL Tech + A-spec suspension + Backup Sensors + Extended Warranty (90 mon/100000) + Touch Of Class Protection + 5K miles listed on craigslist for $40000 O.B.O - no interest expressed (already for 3 weeks).

It's 10 grand less than MSRP!! Plus it's nicer looking!! If I were in the market I wouldn't look twice at the 09....definitely wouldn't look at the beak.

You throw a 98 Rav4 on craigslist and it will sell within a couple of days. And $3400 will NOT offset any kind of taxes seeing that EVEN if there is 10% sales tax (which I doubt) you would only be saving $340. The RAV with those miles is worth more than $3740 IMO. I would sell it privately.

I used to sell cars and what you said above is exactly what I used to tell customers to get them to let me steal their trade.

Lightbulb

I had not idea what a 98 RAV4 with 90K+ miles was market valued.

I went on AutoTrader.com and found the price range between $5500-$8500 for at least a 2 dozen sampling (high mileage) within 1000 miles of my location. That included dealers and private sellers. Of course I did not specify trim level details, but still, that is significantly more than $3400 if you want to take on the effort of a private sale.

Perhaps you should do a similar market comparison to your locale. It may better aide your assessment of the value and effort to sell the RAV4.

Well, I don't sell cars for a living and I'm certainly not trying to steal his car. But I have tried to sell privately, and it's a pain in the a**. Yeah, it might sell in a couple of days.... at $3400!! Personally, I think it will boil down to looking at what you could reasonably get for the vehicle on a private sale. The issue is whether you need the vehicle liquid for the purchase of the RL. Or renegotiate the value of your trade, if they really want the sale they might move on it. Keep in mind there's a difference between what you think you should get for a vehicle and what people will pay. This is why the RL is being sold for such a discount. If you can get $8000 for a 10 year old Rav 4 with 98K miles then you should get back into the car business.

Here's some data that I pulled off KBB.com. 98 Rav4 with 96K miles, I chose the 4WD version and threw in some common options.

Private Party Value Fair Condition $4030
Good Condition $4610

This is if you get that. Private sale shoppers are looking for a deal, just like new car shoppers. My suggestion still stands, it's a good deal... regardless of the trade, $39.5K for the 08 RL Tech (brand new I'm assuming) is an amazing deal. Good luck with your decision!!

I don't think it's worth 8K and I never said it was. I believe that it would be quite simple to get $5K-6K for it pretty fast especially if the OP lives in a climate where snow is an issue.

KBB doesn't always give the right figures; especially right now with how fast the market changes.

Edmunds.com Private Party value $4013, 4WD average condition with common options. The information is about the same wherever you look. Unfortunately, this is what prospective buyers will bring to the table every time you have an interested party. I've been there, done that. It wasn't fun. This was my experience. Basically, when it comes to a 10 year old SUV, it is probably worth more to you than selling/trading it anyway. But if I were to see quoted private party values that I've seen online, and I needed the money for my $10,000 discounted new ride, and they offered me $6-7 hundred dollars less than private party value, with a tax (albeit small) advantage, without the hassles, headaches, test drives, haggling, negotiating, phone calls, dead beat buyers and the like, I would consider it. Yes, the dealer will make money off your car, that is the car business. They will sell it retail, but not get what they're asking for it either. You're paying for them to sell your car. I don't do my landscaping, I don't clean my house, and I don't paint. I've given up selling cars too. Some things are worth paying someone else to do. If you feel like they are "stealing" your car, then walk away. Maybe you could get $5K for your vehicle, who knows. But if you want a superb vehicle for $10K off MSRP then you know what to do. My 05 RL was a beauty!!

I think the trade-in was acceptable. RAV4 was a 4WD and never have major maintenance

The RAV4 was a 4WD and never have a 30,45,60,75,90 service. It runs great. This is Toyota's reliability until now where I was recently quoted a $1200 to fix the struts, front brake/caliper, rotor pads and transmisison flush. So I decided to trade in for 08 rl. which would net me 1200+3400=5600. I'm sorry I didn't mentioned that I owned currently a 07 RDX (wife's/baby ride). I fell in in love with the RL and have been looking for the best price for the last 4 mionths now.

Thanks for the additional info. That more than seals the deal on the trade, I would throw them the keys, like a football long bomb. I agree with Tampa, you need to snatch up this RL for this price, you may never see another RL so heavily discounted, unless they muck up the 2011. I will repeat, you will not get a better deal than what you have. If you were waiting for the best deal possible, you have it!! I was going to give you a play by play of my nightmare experience trying to sell my 2002 TL Type-S (black on black, meticulously maintained, 45K commuting mile, excellent condition) 3 years ago to help you make your decision. I spent $200 in advertising, wasted 3 months of my life and eventually traded it for the same amount the last dead beat buyer offered me and didn't show up to pay. Did I mention you should get the RL??

Take it and run.

If you're lucky, you MIGHT find another new 08 RL. There are very few in Northern NJ. You could push for the Acura extended warranty to seal the deal.

Good luck and hope you get it!

i would second, third, fourth and fifth the opinions here... placed a call into two nearest Acura dealers.. both quoted $42K for '08 Black on taupe/tan RL... i told them i'd consider trading it for '05 RL if out-the-door-price is $39.5K.. they told me to go take a hike

astig, go buy your RL. Again, you got a good price assuming it's new.

This thread got very interested...

OP: did you get the RL yet?

Dctuna: I definitely agree with what you say; sometimes the hassle is definitely not worth the headache and you had a bad experience trying to sell a TL. TL's (especially 2nd gen) have always been slightly more difficult to unload than other cars. When I worked for a dealership, after getting stuck with 3 of them; I stopped buying them.

The last 3 vehicles I sold, I put them on craigslist and sold them within a couple days max..

My 02 TL Type S had 45000 miles. I was selling it in 05 and was going to get the RL. Online retail values were ~$22K, private party $19K. I advertised for $20499, to get as close to $19K as I could. There was plenty of interest, alot of low balling, calls late at night, people calling and not showing up, accepting offers that people then wouldn't show up to pay, test drive after test drive after test drive, headache after headache. Trade in value online was $16.5k, the last person was going to pay $18K, I was fed up, and accepted. He didn't show up to pay either. I went to the dealer and they offered me $17.5k on the spot, with 7% tax I saved $1225, for a total of $18725, just shy of the quoted private party value that all buyers came to me with and wanted $2K off that price!!

My car went on the showroom as a CPO. They had a selling price of $24K!! My salesperson later told me they sold it for $20.5K. So they made money, I got what I wanted for it, and I got my RL for $3K under invoice. Win Win(lose for wasting my time trying to sell) And I thought to myself, why did I put myself through that??

So, I don't have a warm fuzzy feeling inside about selling cars. I'm glad others have done well though. This is why I feel strongly though about advising others to seriously look at their dealer offered trade in value compared to quoted private party values. Maybe their vehicle will sell quickly and maybe it won't. Personally, I'll always trade as long as its reasonable.

Thanks everybody for replying. My finance rate came up at 8% and very disappointed when they add the destination charge of 675 on top of the 39.5K quoted last week. Final price of car 40175. This is a brand new(25 miles on it) on a white pearl/ebony RL. I like the color very much. Im gonna drop at the dealer Friday to renegotiate it to 40K. I will be posting the updates afterward

8% I guess that's what to expect during this credit contraction.

Even $40.1k is not unreasonable, but $39.5 is obviously better. Adding the destination charge=BS. I mean, jeez.

"Final price of car 40175"

That was the exact price I paid for my 06 RL just over 2 years ago.

If the price is hard, consider some dealer throw ins. My dealer always adds in wheel locks, trunk tray and mud guards. I was also able to get the backup camera thrown in (then an option). Perhaps a wood steering wheel or shifter knob?

Agreed Bob I even got 10% ten years ago with absolutely ZERO credit score. Then again you had to have near perfect score just to get the 2.9%.

I agree with Tampa. If the dealer is firm on that price, have them add a few goodies.

Hopefully, you'll post that you're a new owner on Friday.
