2006 tech package availability
None of my local dealers has been able to tell me anything about the 2006 RL with the technology package (collision mitigation braking system, adaptive cruise control, run-flat tires). So I called up Acura's home office. They tell me that no 2006 models with the tech package will ship to dealers until mid-November to early December. They're also planning to build only about 2000 of these models.

I can't say it doesn't surprise me that they are only going to build 2k of these models. Most people wouldn't want to pay the premium for the features. Do you know what color you are going to get?

I'm looking for white exterior, ebony interior. I'd be thrilled if I could get it for 50K. I was going to sit down with a dealer this weekend and hammer out a price and put down a deposit.
In our area, there are a lot of fatal accidents where people just run off the road and hit a tree (usually a redwood). Anyone know if the collision mitigation braking system would help "mitigate" this kind of accident? Or does it only reduce the impact of hitting the car in front of you?

Three Wheelin'
sbloom,
The RL's handling, SH-AWD and VSA should help keep you from running off the road. Once you're off road, the features you will covet are the ACE body structure and all those airbags which give the RL it's superb crash test ratings. The CMBS is more intended to help you out if you are tailgating or not paying attention when the vehicle in front of you brakes and starts applying the brakes for you.

It will mitigate any collision it detects coming, be it tree or car. It's a nice feature, IMO - not sure its worth $10,000 over the 05 RL considering the 05 has SH-AWD, VSA/TCS, ABS, and tons of airbags.

The only thing that will prevent you from hitting a tree is the stuff between your ears. Pay attention to what you're doing and drive within the limits of the car, yourself and the environment (road, visibility etc.). Now we could argue that the RL and other high performance cars extend this limit further than say a Dodge Ram but that's not the point. Once you hit a tree some cars protect you better than others. The RL is right up there.
Redwoods sure suck to run into. Might as well we a boulder. They don't give an inch. At least when you hit a car there are two deforming bodies involved instead of just one.
There's only one thing to do. Stay on the freakin' road

Thanks to all for your comments. I will try to make sure when my '06 RL with Tech Package leaves the road en route to a redwood tree that I'm not airborne.
I do live in N. California. And today I sat down with the dealer to hammer out the price, so I could at least put down a deposit and order one. The best I could get out of him was $51,500. His argument was that his invoice price (including Tech Package) was about $47,500, and he deserves a mark-up of 10%, esp. for a car so "hot."
I'm not sure the Tech Package really makes the car "hot," and it might even be a liability for the dealer since it really raises the price. But he was willing to let me walk out on him with my "final" offer of $49,000.
I guess the market isn't yet established for the '06 RL with Tech Package, so I'm uncertain what final price the dealer and I will settle on. As I said earlier, I'd probably be thrilled with $50,000 flat.

The 2005 stickered for what, $49,100, in the fall of 2004?
I paid $44,100 in May 2005.
You'll likely be able to save $5000 on the 2006 RL if you wait.
Buy a nice Panasonic plasma television (or two) for that...

Well, I'd rather get the '06 with Tech Package now than wait a year and get the same plus a plasma TV, I guess. I don't really watch much TV anyway.
Today with some hard bargaining at another local dealer I was able to get them down to $49,000 exactly, and I put down a deposit.
Vicneo, I know you were offered $50K, but that included a rear camera. That's probably not a bad price still. I have a rear camera on my MDX, and it's great -- not sure it's so necessary on the RL, though.

Vicneo,
Are you really giving up? I still have my order in...but no delivery date yet. I hope it's not going to be February. At least one person on one of the other threads is already driving his RL with Tech Package. Why don't you hang in there?

The tech package is worth it.

I'm curious, did you have a chance to drive the RL with and without the tech package? Did you notice any difference in the ride/handling given that the tech package has the run-flat tires? Thanks.

I did drive the one without the tech package and runflats-didnt see much difference other than I liked the security of the tech.
We took the car for a 700 mile trip to VA over Thanksgiving-and let me say, VERY NICE.
To compare, in the family we have, 93-Z28, 2000-S430, 2001-Eldo-ETC, and I traded in my 2002 TL-S to take on the RL.
I tested the GS 430 as well as the DTS, CTS, SL500, and settled on the RL.
First off on this road trip, the runflats are very smooth and not too noisey (as I feared the Michelins tend to be) and the ACC is just awesome.
I set it for 90 (the max you can when the ACC is active) and let it work.
Any time anyone cut in front, it gave me the distance between the cars you want. One time a real dickhead cut in close-and the ACC slammed on the brakes.
The only flaw is it doesnt work well when you are tracking a car on curves, not normal curves but sharp curves-the system can lose the car its tracking and it can suddenly pick up speed and the distance can close too much before it realizes to back off.
I was testing it and anyway I dont thing CC is a good thing to use on tight curves-I usually dont but I wanted to see the limits of the system.
That was the only limitation-and thats fair enough.
SH-AWD, freaking great-car is on rails.
We got stuck on 64 as we came in to VA road closed due to some accident, so we opted to back door our way in to our destination.
We were 30 miles from the end when I had to take an 80 mile detour on the back roads on the Applachian mountains to get in. It was midnight, and snowing-so I knew that this was the perfect way to see what this car can do-with only 1000 miles on and the last 630 put on that day.
No street lights, no reflectors on the W-VA back roads, no previous traffic to get the road and the salt/cinder working on the snow/ice.
Well, SH-AWD is all that they put it up to be. 9degree inclines and declines, twists and straightaways-the car performed and saved my ass when I took one left curve on a decline a little too fast for conditions. ABS and I guess everything was working, it took me where I was pointing the wheel, and man I was thankful.
That was the only drawback to the Mich tires-maybe a tad too slick but hey it was my fault because I took it too fast anyway.
On the way back we had weather conditions that allowed me to get it up to 120MPH (valentine is already installed in there) and its just friggin awsome.
Doing an average of about 85, I was getting 24MPH, lower it to 65 and I would get 29mph.
I have put my TL-S up to 140, not very fun after 110, the Z28 up to 145, again not much fun after 120, the Eldo up to 110, felt loose after 90, and the S430 up to 135, felt great up to 125.
For the money-what you get in an RL its a steal.
This is one car that I will keep in the stable for a long time.
The next to go will be the S430. Its just not needed anymore and the wife is clamoring for an MDX anyway.
Hope this helps all you out there.!
