My RL started being difficult today. The last 3 times I've started it - when I turn the key it cranks for about 5-7 seconds before it fires. Any idea what the problem might be? I am concerned that it will stop starting altogether... or if this continues I will wear out my starter.

 

check your battery voltage. also how old are the spark plugs. COP (Coil on plug) usually takes 1-1.5 seconds to start.

also check your battery connections

Most major auto parts places like Auto Zone and Advance Auto Parts will test your battery for free. I'd start there. Considering how heavy the RL is on battery usage, and the symptoms you're having, I would put money on the battery going dead.

 

Did anyone say battery yet?

 

Assuming it isn't your battery (and it doesn't sound like it is), have your Fuel Pressure Regulator checked.

 

When does it do it? How often do you drive the car and how far? Battery needs some time for alternator to charge it. Short trips of 5-10 miles or so don't always do it, especially if car sits a lot.
