2005 RL Auction Prices (sold for)

Pretty interesting. As mentioned before, I'm seeing $26K - $28K at NE Dealerships w/ around 30K miles. Even if a dealer sold these at $23K as CPO, they're still making a nice profit. Never mind at $28K. All but one of these looked clean from the pictures, but I didn't Carfax them all.

Think it's worth sharing this with the dealer when negotiating?

Here are the actual numbers from the CT auction (Oct 29-Nov 11). By the way, not a single '06 was offered.

I've always wondered about auction prices and how valid they are for comparison to dealer retail. Aren't auction cars sold "as is" and you are not allowed to test drive them. Dealer gets no warranty on an auction car, but selling it CPO with an extended warranty leaves it on the hook for 100k miles.

That's how I see it too, 100%. My 2002 was a CPO and that's all I'm interested buying now. At auction, all you can do is check out the Carfax before hand, start the car and do a walk around.

I'm just trying to figure out how far to take the negotiations. After an auction buy, the dealer can probably bill Acura for any repair as it's under warranty (other than cosmetics and brakes/tires). Not sure how the powertrain warranty works, but last week a dealer offered to throw in the 7/100 comprehensive for $550 (which they claimed was the dealer cost). My guess is that the same holds true for the 7/100 powertrain. The dealer buys it from Acura as part of the certification process and passes that cost on to the buyer with a mark up.

I don't mind paying $5K or $6K over the auction price. I realize they need to make some money. But a $10K markup is excessive. I doubt they have 1/5 of that in the car out of pocket to prep for sale.

I also like the negotiation process, especially in this economy. I don't want to piss off the dealer though. We'll probably service it at the same location. I just wonder how far to push it before they'll become aggravated and boot me out of there!

Love to hear some opinions.

The dealer is not on the hook for anything because they pay Acura to offer the warranty so Acura is responsible. Once a car comes in from auction it is sent to the service department where it is inspected and the necessary repairs are made to certify it. Also, the Acura dealer has to write a check to Acura in order to have the warranty on it.

Also what happens at most dealerships is that the Service Dept. overbills for work they do so the used car department ends up overpaying for whatever work gets done to the car. It is a source of much bitterness for the Sales Dept. but that's how it goes... Sales Dept. always gets screwed in the end because the selling price of the vehicles are not set in stone!

I paid $900 for the comprehensive Acura extended warranty, down from $1200 they were asking. $550 is a great price on the warranty, but I've also seen a lot of dealers advertise vehicles with it thrown in.

I have purchased a few cars with my car dealer friend through the primary auction out here in So Ca. We would be allowed to inspect and drive the car on a short strip for test drives. I got in trouble for punching an NSX too much. You can save, but keep in mind that if a an Acura dealer is dumping the car there is something more to it; accident, mileage, etc.

Those retail prices seem high but maybe it's just the area. There are two in my chain of stores. One is a 2005 with 19K selling for $23,900 and another 2005 with 35K selling for the same price.
