105K Service

Is there a Service Reminder that comes up for the 105K service?

I'm at 102K+ and all I see is the oil status % in the MID which is at 70%. I'll clearly pass 105 before the oil change reminder comes on.

There is not standard 105K service threshold in the RL Manual. Everything is dictated by the MID Codes A/B 1-6.

Exceptions noted in the manual:

Independent of the maintenance messages in theMulti-Information
Display

Replace the brake fluid every 3 years.
Inspect idle speed every 160,000miles (256,000 km).
Adjust the valves during services A, B, 1, 2, or 3 only if they are noisy.

Also, if you tow, drive in extreme heat or harsh driving conditions, some fluid changes are recommended at more frequent intervals.

Pages 356-358 of the manual.

Right

You will get a number 4 code to replace spark plugs and timing belt, inspect water pump, valve clearance.

I would change the water pump when you change the timing belt.

Let us know when you get the 4 code or contact FNP90 who has over 250K on his RL.

It will be safe, to change:

Sparks plugs, Fuel filter, timing belt, water pump, the 2 serpentine belts, differential oil and transmision fluid. I did mine at 100K. This will allow you peace of mind for the future and not have to spend big $$ on repairs .
Since my car has No warranty I went on Good Year Services.. They charge me 2K for everything.

Replace timing belt, water pump, belts and tensioners, and plugs
They quoted $1598 (Bay Area, CA)

It is in the MID per the manual: Code 4

Replace spark plugs
Replace timing belt and inspect water pump
If you drive regularly in very high temperatures (over
110°F, 43°C), or in very low temperatures (under
20°F, 29°C), replace every

However it also is mentioned in the manual page 371:

The timing belt should be replaced
at the intervals shown on the
maintenance minder. Replace the
belt at 60,000 miles (100,000 km) if
you regularly drive your vehicle in
one or more of these conditions:

In very high temperatures
(over 110°F, 43°C).
In very low temperatures
(under 20°F, 29°C).
If you frequently tow a trailer.

So likely your MID is about to alert you with a Code 4. Since the MID bundles service needs for convenience...it may be waiting for a typical oil change to bundle with the Code 4.

Tampa - I see what you are saying and referencin, but here's what I see:
Mileage = 103,893
Oil Life 50%
No other code, warnings
I would have thought a Code 4 warnign would appear more than 1000 miles before service due, maybe not.
Typically, I'm getting close to 10,000 miles between oil changes based on the Oil Life monitor. So 50% should be another 4000 or so

I do not know what formulas the MID computes service calls when it bundles multiple service issues near due. But the purpose is to avoid having you go for one service visit, then another triggers in a few thousand miles. Perhaps if the MID is triggered for the timing belt (Code 4) but not yet the oil change (Code 1) it may accelerate the window for your oil change and you will get an A14 or B14 sooner than that 4000 expectation you have? Just my guess.

You can always go with the dealer suggestion and get that service done now and request he include the anticipated A1 as well.

But I suspect the MID computations are within Honda's allowances and tolerances and 110K for the timing belt should not be an issue (with normal wear). Worse case, should it fail, Honda cannot fault you as THEY advise you follow the MID.

If your MID does trigger soon and it does NOT include a Code 4...I would definitely get it done. And then I'd be making calls to find out why. As well as reporting in here!

I just want to get it done before the Holidays, so I've got it scheduled for Monday.
Will report any alerts if received before then.

Of course do what you are comfortable with. I too side of the conservative with my auto maintenance.

FYI....per MyAcura.com on the MID feature:

Maintenance Minder System

The Maintenance Minder system monitors the car’s need for service and notifies the driver of maintenance needs by displaying a message on the instrument panel during start-up. Scheduling is based not only on mileage, but how the car is driven, by checking engine operating conditions, such as weather extremes, stop-and-start traffic and frequent short trips. The system also helps coordinate oil service dates and other maintenance check-ups to minimize your trips to the service department.

getakey -- which dealer are you looking at using? Did you comparison shop for the service? I'm thinking of using Oakland for my service in the future (best according to Yelp). Thanks.

I'm on the peninsula, so I have choice of Hopkins or Mike Harvey.
Checked price at both and Hopkins was a bit cheaper. That said, I've had bad experiences at both

Adjust the valves?!

Pardon the probably stupid question, but does this car have mechanical lifters?

That's really surprising to me.

I am at 81k on my RL and I drive 50k annually (purchased as CPO March 2008 with just 4k miles by one elderly owner). I should strike up a deal with you in a year or two to purchase your 06.....to me it would be like a brand new RL!

Update: Dropped car off this morning for service. Got to 104,200 miles with no Code for service in MID. Oil life meter was still at 50%, so it was probably going to queue it up with that as Tampa described, but now I'll never know.

It would have been interesting to know if the MID responded appropriately. But more important is the service is performed and your peace of mind. "Trusting" the MID with a potentially critical service is not worth risking the car over!

I would suggest asking the tech what his thoughts would be on the MID reporting the timing belt, but I would not get my hopes up the tech is one of the knowledgeable.

Not many here have hit the century mark, so please report in what was done, if there is any characteristic changes in the RL and how much pain the bill was.

well, here's my update:
picked up car late Tuesday, so Service People had all left. Good news, bad news.
Good news is that my mileage appears to be about 10% higher. Assume that is effect of new plugs.
Bad news - I asked them when I dropped the car off if Service included fluid changes since Oil Life was 50% and I did not want to come back in a few months. They indicated Yes and that Oil life would be reset. Well it was not. Secondly, I know have a vibration at idle that I can easily feel through the sterring wheel. So, now I have to go back anyway.
Been out of town, so have not been able to discuss with them.
