10 and 2 vs 8 and 4

I saw this article yesterday
http://bottomline.msnbc.msn.com/_new...ving-all-wrong

As you know, our steering wheels can't be used in 9 and 3 position. After looking at it, do you think it was designed for 8 and 4? I tried that and it does not feel comfortable.

I think the car is designed for 10 & 2 because of the paddle shifters. The wood wheel grips agree. However the airbag argument does seem valid in theory.

After driving home, I realize that the car is designed for 9 & 3; you just can't wrap your fingers around the wheel. They are supposed to rest on the paddles.

I've been one hand driving it the whole time with my hand generally at 9 and then moved around for whichever is comfortable for the turn. I don't see any single position that fits all driving scenarios comfortably.

the 9' position allows for easy turn signal operation...so that's why right hand driving is out of the question for me.

Says who? I drive at 9 and 3 regularly. Pretty much every steering wheel has spokes at 9 and 3. Here's a Ferrari 458 Italia steering wheel for comparison.

He retracted that. I think his initial statement regarded wrapping your hand all the way around the wheel.

In Europe with the LKAS Lane Keep Assist System - it is optional to have any hands/knees on the wheel. The biggest danger of this system is driving other cars and expecting them to steer themselves.
