weird thing beside the shifter

Hi all

Just picked up my 2014 yesterday...please take a look at this photo, is there some kinda cover plate missing here? What is this slotted opening for? Seems weird to place a mysterious apparently useless thing right there....

It appears to me that the cover for that area is missing. The top arrow points to what is used for when you cannot take the car out of park (perhaps a dead battery). If this is the case and you want to move the car you must put it in neutral. By inserting a small screwdriver here and giving it a slight push, you can release that lock so you can move the shifter to neutral and thus move the car. All automatics have this function. If the cover was on this you would see a little slot in it (the cover) that would allow you to put the screwdriver in so you could remove the cover, then you would push this release.

This wasn't noticed during inspection/test drive? Hope you don't get the "as is" speech.

No, my superhuman powers of observation were not functioning well that day, being distracted by the lovely appearance package and the sales guy's annoying blabber.
So, I just got back from the dealer, and since I had to compensate for my lack of observation skills by successfully getting a new cover plate for free, I put on my black leather jacket and boots making myself look a bit dangerous, and walked right into the general sales manager's office and showed him the photo. He promptly grabbed a new cover plate from the parts dept and popped it onto my console himself.
So far so good with this dealer.

It would be interesting to know what they get for that dinky little plastic piece. Glad they took care of you.

my friends are right, if you need a tow, on a flatbed, driver needs to put in neutral to release the wheels to put on the lift. i needed it once, hope i dont again
