Harsh up-shifting when accelerating at low speeds.

My 2013 RDX (tech) has starting to have an issue where it can violently up-shift (2nd to 3rd or 3rd to 4th ???) while accelerating from a stop. It started as an intermittent issue that I only felt once or twice when the car was under load (i.e. going up a hill). This weekend, however, it started to do it regularly even on level roads.

I tried Sport mode and that postpones the problem as it seems to stay in 3rd for a longer time. But it still happens when the shift eventually occurs. When I was testing in Sport mode, I tried the paddle shifters and they did nothing at all. I was expecting them to upshift/downshift and show the current gear like it does in Drive. ???

At best, it can be described as harsh. But most of the times, it's downright violent.

Of course, I've scheduled a appointment at my dealer.

In the meantime, I was wondering if anyone out there has faced this issue? I would appreciate any feedback or advice on presenting this to the dealer.

Thanks,
Dwayne

I brought my car to two different dealer services with the same complaint. It regularly shifts rough between 1st and 2nd starting up a slight incline, and intermittently shifts rough in stop and go traffic. Both dealers brushed it off as normal and explained to me that it's all electronic and shifts based on my driving, blah blah blah. What they call normal I call bad engineering. I'm curious to know how they handle your claim.

I should also add the two loaners I drove also have the same 6 speed transmission. The TL shifted very rough and even shook the car, but the MDX was very smooth.

Well... the problem went from intermittent to all the time. Rather than waiting for my appointment, I decided to take it right in so that the dealer could witness the problem. On the way there, the transmission triggered a fault code of P0848.

So now I really had something to show them

They looked it over and now I'm waiting for a new part. We'll have to see how it shifts after this is replaced.

I'm a bit concerned about having these types of issues on a one month old car. Hopefully this will take care of it.

Update:

The dealer replace a faulty transmission fluid pressure switch. Now everything's back to normal.

Finger's crossed

Ouch. Sorry to hear that.

Did it sustain body damage? Will they fix it?

Hopefully the dealer will fix the issue --- they are still "investigating". I sustained significant body damage to the vehicle (the car hit a brick wall). Not pretty nor driveable so I had it towed to the dealer. I also filed a complaint with NHTSA. I encourage DIRVIN to do the same even though his car was fixed with a replaced part (www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov). Its definitely a safety concern.

DIRVIN: what dealership did you take your car to? I'm in Southern Cally and there are a lot of hills here.

I'm in Cincinnati. I took my car to Superior Acura.

Ball Acura is repairing the car --- it will take 2 weeks to complete repairs.

Were they able to diagnose the transmission issue? I would be curious to hear if it was the same part.

I don't see how a gear shift will make you crash into a wall unless you were already moving pretty quickly.

I'm glad you are ok and the car is being fixed for free.

Nope wasn't moving quickly at all when the accident happened. Was pulling into a parking spot on an incline (~ 35 degree incline) after coming to a full stop & car aggressively jerked forward on the incline, on its own volition. It was strange. Will let you know if its the same transmission issue.

Sadly, Ball Acura in National City said they will not fix the car. Incredibly they claim there is nothing wrong with the RDX. They had my car for 2 weeks. So now, its off to another dealer for repair. I propose RDX owners to keep posting this issue & to file complaints with NHTSA to alert other consumers for what I am proposing may become another recall.

@ Ottoman101: what was your resolution?

That sucks. Did you try calling Acura client relations?

There is another post on here in regards to "lurching"
where a poster actually noted theres a page in the manual that says it will jerk forward due to the A/C being on.
I get it sometimes in the morning when i start the car , you can see the rpms to up as its shifting into Reverse (higher than any car i've ever owned)

Luckily the brakes on the RDX are super sensitive so you dont have to depress them MUCH but its still a concern for those days when you're not on your A game! lol (pre coffee)

Hmm, just found this thread and th gf said twice in last month while accelerating from a stop the car jerks/lurches. I have also noticed it bogs on occasion when pulling up my driveway which I have attributed to the switch from AWD to FWD. She is due for first oil change so and will be sure to mention it.

my 02 CLS does the lurch and it is ONLY when the A/C compressor kicks on. Simple solution, USE MORE PRESSURE on the brake pedal when you are stopped. Never had the car lurch forward in the 9 years I have had it
