2014 RDX Base Apple Carplay Headunit Project
2014 RDX Base Apple Carplay Headunit Project
Hey all, creating this thread with the goal of establishing some documentation on my process along with getting feedback from the community to help improve the process.
Goal
Install Panasonic DMH-WT5000NEX Single DIN with an adjustable 9 inch screen in place of the factory 4 inch LCD screen
Bypass factory amplifier and radio for speaker connections
Utilize factory backup camera OR install an aftermarket replacement in the factory location
Install Kicker 48CWRT82 in factory location but utilize an aftermarket amplifier.
Utilize factory locations where possible for accessory connections(Reverse camera, microphone, GPS)
Progress So Far
Mounting Bracket
I've fabbed up a crude steel bracket for the Panasonic head unit to be mounted to.
The bracket is made out of 1 Inch flat steel with two 90 degree bends to accommodate the head unit
The bracket seems like it will work for now but its prob going to need some reinforcement
Speaker Wires
I purchased a spool of 16 AWSG speaker wire and ran fresh cables to the factory locations(only 4 speakers in the base model)
All of the cables use the same wiring path as the factory speaker wires until the wires get behind the dash, then i optimized the path a bit while steering clear of the pedals or anything that moves
Subwoofer
I've done minimal work here, planning on running the RCA, power and remote cables sometime this afternoon unless I run into another snag
If all else fails, I might buy or build a box for the sub(hope this isn't needed)
Reverse Camera
I'm holding off on buying an aftermarket reverse camera for now
Running the wiring looks pretty annoying(looks like the wires run through the kick panels on the drivers side, up the rear c-pillar to the grommet at the top of the rear decklid, back down the side of the decklid to the camera
I'm also a little concerned with using the factory camera and having the resolution look terrible on the 9 inch screen
Current Challenges
Looking to tap into a power source as cleanly as possible... any suggestions on which cable to tap into?
Is using the factory camera worth it or is it better to just go aftermarket?
Can the factory subwoofer box accommodate an aftermarket sub pushing 250 Watts?
I'm sure more questions will come up as this progresses but I plan to be diligent about upgrades because this has really been the maid weak point of the ownership experience of this car. The RDX will be damn near perfect for a daily driver once this gets sorted IMO.
