Roof Top Tents
Hey everyone,
I was curious if anyone has a roof top tent for their RDX. I've been checking out CVT and Tepui tents for camping. They weigh between 100 to 220lbs depending on the size. I believe the weight capacity of the rails is 165lbs. So I'm debating on if it would be sufficient to mount and use one of these tents. Between my wife and I, including the weight of the tent would be under 400lbs. The weight would be spread evenly due to the built in platform and the rest on the chassis which could hold the added weight no problem. I just want to make sure the oem rails can handle the weight. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I think the MDX has 165lbs roof weight limit. The RDX roof is only about 110lbs total weight.

Wow! This is a new one for me. Thought I’d read everything I could about the RDX until now. To answer your question, I have no clue. I’ll follow this thread to see where it goes. Any PICS of what this tent looks like?

There are other companies that make them as well but these are my top 2 choices. My brother is picking one up for his '17 Tacoma.

when I owned a FJ cruiser a lot of folks were interested in roof top tents - but what about getting up in the middle of the night and having to use the bathroom, and forgetting how up high you were

I really like the idea of a roof top tent, the added safety is a huge bonus! However it has always made me wonder how safe it was for the roof, I'm assuming the platform keeps the weight off of the actual roof and instead on the bars but what if the platform was to bow?

Thats not the point of a roof top tent. Takes little to no time to setup, decreases the chance of bugs inside the tent sleep with you and it leave more space in the already small hatch to pack more gear. Seems logical to me. Thanks for your comments though.

The weight rating for the roof rack is the dynamic load rating which means how much weight they can take while the vehicle is moving at full speed. It does not reflect the static weight capacity, which is many many many times higher.
TLDR answer: you'll be fine.
