Does anyone else get much worse mileage in the winter or is is just me? During the summer I was averaging about 26 but now that it's colder out I'm getting around 22 or 23. Is this normal?

It's the "winter blend" fuel. http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars...rence-13747431

In a word....Yes. Winter blend gas gives you poorer MPG. Also, modern engines run more efficiently when they are at operating temperature and it takes longer to get to operating temperature when you start out with a very cold engine. Add in that many people "warm" their cars up a little more in the winter and traffic moves a little slower when there is bad weather and you have a recipe for reduced MPG. It's normal.

The highest I've gotten on 90% highway at 75MPH is 29MPG. Since I have a remote starter and the winter in New England can get a bit nippy, I tend to idle the car longer than someone who lives in a milder climate, therefore lowering my overall MPG. However, even with that taken into consideration, I am averaging around 20-21 MPG with 40% city driving.

Also, check your tire pressure. If you are a couple of pounds lower in cold weather, it can make a difference in your mileage.

I have a 2014 FWD. I normally average 21-23 mpg driving around suburban Atlanta. Highway mileage has been 29-31 mpg with the best mileage in a segment between central Virginia and New York. Total miles is 8300 so far.

this is just about what I am experiencing...keep in mind, it's been very cold this winter and snowy. I let the car start for about 10 mins every morning...this eats up some gas

I have been getting anywhere from 20-22 lately..sucks

My first couple fill-ups were in the 15 mpg range. The last couple have been trending upwards, so I am attributing the poor mileage to a) new engine breaking in, and b) cold weather & all the fuel economy decreases associated with winter. I'm also running regular (87) octane for now.

I don't think gas grade matters much. I have been tracking my fill-ups for the last 8+ months altering between 93 and 87 (at least 2 consecutive tanks each) and haven't noticed any significant difference.

Gas grades play more of a role in performance than mileage.

Depends on the car. I can't get my Mazda3 to perform better with either 93 or 87 (I used to autocross). However you did notice a difference in my mom's MX5 using the butt dyno. Also my twin turbo Audi would have shown me the insides of the engine if I dared to put 87 on it

In the RDX I don't know if it does or does not affect performance. Only real way to tell would be to strap the sucker on a dyno and measure 87, suck the tank dry, and then drop in 93 and measure again. Personally I can't tell a difference but maybe I'm not pushing the car too hard given the MPG I'm getting.

You're right. Mazda 3 only needs 87 so anything higher won't make a difference. However, the RDX is recommended at 91, so going lower will affect the performance.

Still on my first tank, 2014 fwd, and I'm averaging 19 combo. I'm no lead foot but I suspect the avg will get better with engine break-in. I did shred some rubber the other day jumping onto the highway feeder. I'm glad the car has some muscle.

Just past the 1000 km mark and I'm averaging a little over 12 l/100km (18-19 mpg) in mostly city driving this winter. My total average speed is showing as 40 kph, I'd say its at least 80% city driving. Considering its still brand new, the winter temps and mostly city driving, I'd say its not too bad.

For me the fuel economy reading in the RDX is typically about 1-2 L/100k lower than manual calculation. I've noticed the difference is much greater with more city driving, so i'm guessing it doesn't take idling into consideration?? Perhaps its more accurate if you spend most of your time on the highway.

^^ Fat Mike...Expect an easy 8.5-9L/100km this summer.....I have done as low as 7.2l/100km on a 250km trip driving an average of 80-90km on secondary roads

99% of the time running around our traffic light ridden small city (outskirts of Denver) - 22.7 mpg after just over 1 year of ownership.

After 18 months and 13K miles, I average 19-20 mpg puttering around town, with all the stop-and-go, waiting, etc. On the open road cruising, I get close to 30 mpg all the time; and, if I'm using non-ethanol premium, 33 mpg or a bit better.

Almost as good as a hybrid of this size...

I've had my 13 FWD Tech for 9 months and have put 289 gallons of premium through it, up to my last fill-up. I made a trip to the Bay Area once, when I first leased it. Other than that, my driving is almost purely light-to-light driving.

I keep a log of the gas (how much, where I got it, what it cost) and, like clockwork, get 21.3 miles per gallon with Shell gas. If I have to, I use QT. I NEVER use Chevron (I've always had problems with Chevron in any of my Hondas). The trip to CA averaged 27 miles.

I currently have 6700 miles on my RDX and use only Mobil1 full synthetic oil.

20.2 mpg on my 2nd tank and 21.3 mpg on my 3rd tank. A nice trend upwards...

I'm still getting used to the small 13 gallon tank. My X5 has a large 22 gallon tank.

I think it's 16 gallons, to be exact (and pedantic ). We're seeing 21-22 around town with 3500 miles on the car. Haven't taken a long trip since the first week we had it...got around 30 then but I hope it'd do a little better now.

My F250 had a 38 gal tank...costs a fortune to fill up with diesel (10 mpg when towing).

Mark, sounds similar to my experience. What gas do you use?

I'm in Surprise, btw.

I always fill up with 'premium'...seems to mostly be 91 octane around here. We use Costco or Sam's Club gas almost exclusively...I think we've done only one fill-up that wasn't Sam's or Costco and that was in Quartzite on our way home from LA.

Our new Costco has signs proclaiming the addition of detergents and additives over and above the standard levels, effectively bringing the Costco fuel into 'Top Tier' range. I normally stick with Top Tier petrol, mainly Chevron and Shell; but I'll now happily fill up at Costco when convenient. The 87 is usually the same price as branded stations in our area; but the premium is often 10-15 cents/gal less. It all adds up! (Don't know about Sams and BJ's fuel...not a customer of theirs).

I have a 2014 RDX AWD with almost 12,000 miles on it. I commute via interstate 85 miles a day. From day one I have avg'd 27.5 mpg using mid-grade gasoline. I'm currently running snow tires and averaging 25.5 mpg. Salesman was pushing using regular gasoline but the few times I tried it I lost 3-5 mpg. I previously had the 2008 & 2010 turbo that had to run premium and I averaged 21 mpg. So I've been lucky to see a significant savings.
