Power Tailgate

Hi guys,

I am not able to open the tailgate by pushing the power button beside the steering but no problem using the remote control. Do I have to configure or setup something in order for that button to work? I hope is not something wrong with the button..

I have to manually unlock the doors of my rdx on the door for the button next to the steering wheel to work. The car has to also be in park.

the doors need to be unlocked (all of them) in order to open the tailgate manually or with power.

The car has to be in Park, and you have to hold the button for about a second. The doors may or may not need to be unlocked - it depends how you have it set in the "Power Tailgate" option in "Customize Settings" on the dash.

Just a friendly reminder to all those that have "functional" questions about the new RDX....or any new "loaded with tech. stuff" cars.

Read the Owner's Manual. Virtually most all these questions can be and are answered there. I know....we all hate to read the "instructions" first. My wife just likes to start pushing buttons until something happens!! LOL! I try to get her to "understand first" what she is pushing and what the results "might be!" Who knows.....I could be launched out the sunroof....James Bond style! Hmmm...maybe that's the button she's trying to find! LOL!!!!!!

"Read the Owner's Manual." I always do that as part of my purchase decision be it automobile, lawn mower, refrigerator, television... whatever if I can get it on-line beforehand I read it. Even so there is always something needing a later review of the OM for clarity.

GRDX....I down loaded the OM and the "Techy" manual so I could do some reading and looking up some things that I read about here. There's a LOT of "stuff" in those books. Most I know...since it's pretty much the same for all vehicles. But, those "specifics" related to a vehicle are important to read, now that cars have so much tech. and electronic controls for so many systems.

Even at that...Sat. when my wife and I pick our new "toy" I will let the guy...picked by the GSM....to show us anything we should know and demonstrate it. We will pair our phones there, and do some stuff with the audio, etc. I could learn it all from the book, but, it doesn't hurt to hear it, see it, then if still stumped....read it!! 007 would probably have to have his tech dept. show him his new RDX!!

My car is on and is in park but door still cannot open by pressing the button inside. It looks like there is something wrong with the button and I need to bring it back to the dealership.

I remember during my test drive, the sales guy and I had a heck of a time trying to open the tailgate with the button. I couldn't find the owners manual anywhere in the car. Somehow we did something where pushing the button allowed the door to open. Not sure what, but I'm sure it was something simple.

I think the default setting is that all of your doors must be unlocked for it to open. I assume you tried that?

Hey Gang....concerning the unlocking/opening of the tailgate.
I just read the Manual and this is what I get from it.

Must be in "Park." The "default" setting is; that when you push the button on the dash....it unlocks and opens the rear hatch. You can "customize" the door opening setting so that....."you have to unlock the door first and then activate the button to have it open."

When it works...a warning chime system is heard and outside lights are supposed to flash.
Oh, and it says to hold the button for at least one second. That goes for the Smart Key button also.

That's everything I can find on this issue.

Hope that helps.

I called the sales guy today. He said I may hit the button inside the glove box, that's why the door doesn't open for the valet parking purposes. Anyway, I don't see any button inside the glove box.

I will need to try and use mine when I get home now. You guys got me curious...To be honest, I don't recall having a situation when I needed the hatch to open on its own so I just do it manually (open the tailgate that is),,,but I will try later when I get home from work and report back.

Stay tuned.....

The tailgate needs to be fully closed in order for the dash button to open it. My guess is the sensors or tailgate need an adjustment. Even though it is closed it may think it is open. You may want to try opening it manually and firmly closing it manually then see if it works but most likely needs to go in for an adjustment.

I just got back from getting my PO and looking over my new RDX, AWD, Tech, White Diamond Pearl/Parchment. They are keeping it in the showroom, Sold sign on the windshield and doors locked...with Both keys under lock with the GSM! Just like I wanted it done.

This RDX is gorgeous. Only the second white one I've seen....the first one looked like it had been driven through a dirt field....seriously..it was that dirty! Mine...of course has been buff waxed by the prep guy...and I was told it will gone over one more time before I pick it up on Sat. But, damn...what a nice SUV!! Finally got my Acura.

And, by the way, I did a check out of the rear lift gate opening system. The default is set to have the driver's door unlocked, and then, as weather said...hold the button for at least a second.

You can customize the system....as I mentioned in another posting.....by having the operator physically unlock all doors...using the driver's door lock/unlock button. Then you can push the button to open the rear hatch. I'm like weather....I'll probably just do it manually like I'm used to doing with my CRV's. Not quite sure yet why I truly need it to open with a motor.

^^^ Congrats Colorado Guy! I am super happy for you and trust me, I know all too well this RDX looks in white I am sure that it will be a great day for you on Saturday when you pick it up. Lets just hope it doesn't rain that day for you...that would just be catastrophic (for me anyways).

I see great minds think alike when it comes to the power lift gate. The only time I could see a great use for it is if you have a spouse who is really short and can't quite get a good grip on the liftgate or with people who have a medical condition who's lost full strength in their arm. Otherwise, it is not something I would use myself....

Hey weather and Colorado guy, I seldom use the dash button to open the tailgate. But, if you just start the tailgate up from the external release on the tailgate, it will open automatically and when you want to close it just press the button on the tailgate and it will power close. I find it very handy when removing something from the storage area.

Colorado guy, congratulations on your new ride!!

Regards, Jim

I use the key fob to open the power tailgate all the time. When approaching with a shopping cart full of groceries, walking across the parking lot with the dog (who rides in the cargo area)... I use the dash button when I get home so the dog can jump out as I am getting out. And I LOVE the auto close feature - keeps my grimy hands off the tailgate! Fewer finger/hand prints and less chance of scratching if the car is a little dirty.

It may be that old "operator error" syndrome.

Go to Acura.com, then click on My Acura. There you register. After that you can download the Owner's Manual and the Tech. Manual.

Hey weather...thanks for the shout out. It's been a long day. 100 degrees today....!!! My Acura guy, who happens to be the top salesman there....spent a lot of time with us....although he was talking pretty fast and zipping through the screens, etc. Nice guy answered any and all questions....but, as you probably know....it does all go so fast, and there is much to learn and know about all the many electro..automated....gizmos on this RDX! Wow! And I used to teach the entire operations of the cockpit in the DC-10 jumbo jet!!! And I flew it in a full motion simulator...was able to take off and land...after some practice! LOL! THAT my friend is the ultimate "video game."

So, the RDX is home, tucked away. My wife saw it for the first time sitting in the showroom. She went "Wow" like I did last Thurs. when I was there. It is beautiful.

We discussed the DVD-A issue again...and, according to him it is NOT on the way out. He said go to Amazon and more and more of them can be found.
But, other than that....I have no other input on how to get the full 5.1 Surround Sound experience.

But, the RDX is special. Kinda do miss my '11 CRV. They were very impressed with it. How nice it was, of course only 8,450 miles on it. Wish I could have kept it as a winter car....like you have!! But, I don't think I'm in your income bracket! LOL!!

I will have to say....driving down the freeway at 55 to 75...there was more road noise than I thought there would be. And, a little more engine noise than I expected. So, somewhat disappointed with that.

But, overall it's very nice. No regrets. Tonight I put the cargo cover in, put my wheel locks on and my chrome valve stem caps...which I always put on my cars. Had these items on the Acura TSX wheels that were on the CRV...whick I saved...of course.

Tomorrow I'll put the mud flaps on. Next week the body side mldgs. and the clear door edge guards will get put on.

And, of course, playing with all the electronics to get used to the differences from my '12 Accord. Actually my Accord's blue tooth operation is simpler than the RDX....and even Matt...(Senior Salesman) said there are some "extra" steps that annoy him too.

I looked at the Acura All Weather Mats.....not that crazy about them. I will try and wait for the Weather Techs to come out....hopefully in time for the bad weather. If not...then I will have to get them.

Also...a note you, me, we can pass on to others that are interested......the "wood grain interior kit" is actually darker than the pics that Acura shows. It's more like a walnut color. Actually should look great in a Parchment interior. Not so much in the black. I will revisit that down the road.

So, that's it for now.

Take care. Oh, not sure when I'll have pics. But, hey, just go out and look at yours!! Same on the outside at least!!!!!!

I had the same problem with the dashboard button not operating the power tailgate. I read the manual cover to cover as I always do and it doesn't cover the subject. When someone here suggested a button in the glove compartment, I went to look for one. As I walked out I thought about the child proof locks in the rear doors. Mine were locked to where the rear doors can't be opened from inside. Unlock them and the tailgate button works as advertised. See p 105 in the manual on child safety locks. No mention of the tailgate though.

Congrats COLORADO GUY.....I went to look at my RDX picture section and OMG, your RDX looks GORGEOUS *lmao* I am really happy for you and I am sure you will love the RDX more and more with each passing day. I am not going to lie though, I am still perplexed why some RDX owners feel there is lots of wind noise while some say its whisper quiet. I am the most anal person you will ever meet (see how I treat my car?!?) when it comes to vehicles and wind noise and rattles....cannot stand either one of them and if I would have perceived any slightest of wind noise (other than when someone breaks some), I would have never bought it.....Mine is so quiet that it is almost eerie at times. I am just intrigued thats all.... *shoulder shrug*

In any event, if you have any other questions, comments or observations, I'd be more than happy to help, read or comment Long live the Diamond White Pearl's

PS...Having the CR-V as a winter vehicle would have been nice.....I got rid of the RAV4 I had prior to the RDX and after I parted ways with it, I decided to buy a little econo car to reduce fuel consumption, insurance costs. That little Accent fits the bill and sure makes me appreciate when I can leave my TL and RDX in the garage all fully detailed and rain proof *lol*

Chimes and warnings? Can you put it in drive without a voice saying, "Are you sure you want to do that?"

I totally agree with you. The car drives like a dream, I can't hear wind noise, unless it's a very windy day.
There is a bit of rough suspension noise while driving over bad pavement though... I have to admit. But it's not a deal breaker.

Congrats Colorado Guy!

Thanks rdxm......spent all day "playing" with the new toy. I had to be a little annoyed when I was reading in the manual, and got to the page on the cabin filter. Doesn't say much...but, what got me....doesn't tell you how to change it like the Honda manuals do. They say....take it to your Acura dealer when the Maint. Minder tells you it's time to replace!! Man...they really want you to go to the dealer for every little thing to make that cash register ring!!! Anyway....I found where it's "hiding."

If anyone likes doing some of their own auto maint. and is fairly mechanically inclined here is where it's hidden.

Remove the "shelf" that's in the glove box. Manual shows you how to do that....just be careful. On the back wall of the glove box is a "trap door" that is easy to remove. And then....Ta Da....there is the filter box. You have to remove the front "door" by releasing the latches on the sides. BE CAREFUL. Don't get in a hurry. Once that front is off....slide out the old filter and slide in your fresh new one that you can buy on line from Bernardis or H&A. Why pay the dealer to do something this simple. Save you a lot of $$.

Man, this thing has so much computer controlled "stuff" that I feel like I'm in that DC-10 again!! Well, almost! Glad there's a long warranty on this Acura.

I found the "blue lights" that are supposed to be the ambient interior lighting I had read about. Two tiny blue lights on the overhead controls....that allow a very soft blue light to shine down towards the console. Then I found the third blue light under the protruding center dash controls...below the temp. controls. That blue light shines down on the forward part of the center console.

I'd rather have what the Honda Accord offers as an Accessory. Blue led's that shine down into each footwell area. The switch is put into a blank swith box left of the steering coloumn. Just like it was built that way from the factory. Acura should offer the same.

They do a lot of nice touches here and there. Those are interesting wheel well liners. A "felt like" material. I was surprised to see that.

Anyway.....nice SUV. Would I change some things. Of course. But, as I've said here before. The "like list" is much longer than the "don't like" list.
