New car. Scratch in the side mirror

I bought a new 2014 RDX less than a week back. This morning, I noticed a small scratch in the driver side mirror. You can only see the scratch in the sun. When I move my finder over the side mirror, I don't feel it. It is not visible when it is not sunny.

What can be done about it? Should I take it to the dealer? I am afraid he will say that it was scratched after I left the showroom. Any suggestions? TIA.

^^ If you can't feel the scratch with your nail as you run across it, it is very superficial and should be easily removable with wax. What color is your RDX?

My RDX is black but not sure how the external car color is relevant. The superficial scratch is on the mirror directly and not on the body.

^^ My question about the exterior color was just for my own personal interest

Oh....you mean the scratch is directly on the glass and not on the painted surface of the mirror. My bad. Take it to the dealership and see what they can do for you.

Is it the vertical line running down the left side of the mirror? If so thats supposed to be there to help see in the blind spot. Any other scratches, call the dealer and ask to have the mirror replaced.

Not sure if you can polish a mirror but that would seem like a viable option.

I didn't have my RDX for 2 months and I had a rock hit my windshield leaving a chip but not deep enough to fill or cause a crack. I used Z-12 Clear View Glass Polish from Zaino's, which is a mild abrasive to smooth out the damage. This removed most of the chip (it is still noticeable but no where near it was). Maybe trying something like this or a mild abrasive for glass.

If the scratch is an actual scratch on the glass of the mirror, do *not* try to polish it out. Yes, glass can be polished, but not the side mirror. Here is why ...

Place the tip of your fingernail against the glass/ mirror. If there is no space between the tip of your nail, and its reflection, that means that the reflective coating is on the *surface* of the mirror. The mirrors in your house, such as in the bath, have the reflective coating on the *back* of the mirror. So, there would be a small space between the tip of your fingernail, and its reflection - the thickness of the glass - or use a small pointed article, such as a nail file or ball point pen, instead of your fingernail.

Anyway, trying to polish the side mirror, will only damage (further) the reflective coating on the mirror surface - as I discovered the hard way.

My wife said *fix* it ASAP, or have the dealer fix it. My attempt at polishing was distracting - I replaced the mirror glass myself the next day after work. You will need to decide if the scratch on your own side mirror, warrants replacement.

It is not a scratch. It is a reflection that looks exactly like a scratch.

It irks me when people reach out for help and then never bother coming back and thank people for helping them out, or at least, for trying to understand their problem.

Luckily, this site has more of the good contributors...

I apologize for not responding earlier. I was traveling and haven't had a chance to confirm if it is indeed a reflection or a scratch. The dealer is going to look at it too next week.

you can safe yourself a trip to the dealer. what you see is the reflection of the chrome strip on the left air vent. cover it up with your hand and the so called crack will disappear.

You don't need the dealer to confirm that it is a reflection. Save those dealer visits for important stuff.

Yes, I am planning to cancel my appointment. It is a reflection. I will now have to figure out how to avoid the reflection.
