New 2014 RDX - Bad MPG

Hi there,

I recently got a 2014 AWD RDX I currently have about 500 miles o it and my MPG meter has been hovering around 16. 90% of my driving has not been on highways but the car is advertised as 19 city/27 highway so I am still well below where I should be. When I drive, I constantly keep my eye on the mpg meter and am very cognizant of my driving habits. I try not to accelerate to quickly and do a good amount of coasting, especially into red lights and stop signs. It's not fun driving this way and I am getting crappy MPG so it's all for nothing.

Could there be something wrong with the car?

Do you spend a lot of time idling? Where are you located? Do you drive on a lot of hills? Altitude, weather and terrain have a big effect on fuel economy. While 16 mpg is low, it doesn't seem unreasonable. Also, have you checked your actual fuel economy with how many miles you've traveled with how much fuel was used when you fill up your tank?

^ That's your issue. Traffic. Idling and traffic lights kill MPG.

I would not worry with only 500 miles on it, it is still breaking in. I noticed big improvement after 4,000 in both city and highway mileage..

Have you tried setting the MID to reset after each gas fill up? My RDX was test driven exclusively in town and with a 70% hwy commute it was averaging 16.9. Once the reset was done the mpgs went to the expected 24-26.

Nothing wrong with the car. EPA sticker is 19 City and you are getting 16. That is perfectly acceptable esp if it's stop and go, 25mph zones, etc. It could even be worse.

True, NYC only, I get about 13.5, highway is very good, got 32 on LIE (no trafic, going about 59). Trip from NYC to Ocean City, MD with 2 adults, 2 kids (14 and 7) and full back of "stuff", got a little over 29.

I'm in San Francisco - and between hills and slow traffic, I average around 18 in the City. Jumps up to close to 30 however on long freeway trips.

I was on a recent trip and got about 32 mpg as well, so I am delighted by the fuel efficiency of this vehicle!!
