Myth or Reality - Increased performance after first oil change

Hi all,

I have been reading on various forums that there is a performance boost (both pickup and mileage) after first oil change. Is that true?

What has your experience been with the new RDX?

On a separate note how soon (mileage wise) did you have to go in for the first service. I have a little over 3800 miles and the oil life display is at 40%. I though the oil life in RDX was 7500 or 10,000 miles.

Thanks
Aks

If you follow the maintenence minder there is no set milage. The on board computer bases the need for an oil change on your driving habits and multiple other factors. I ended up at around 7000 miles when the oil life hit 15% and I brought it in. Feel free to read the first service thread on this forum.

As far as performance boost that has to do with overall break-in of the entire engine and is not necessarily a night-and-day increase due to the oil change itself. The oil change is just an event in the lifespan of the vehicle. Also it could be that during the oil change the tires get inflated properly when they hadn't been before or multiple other factors that would increase performance or milage. It's much more a coincidence than a cause-effect.

All my cars drove better right after changing the oil and filter, so yes you'll notice performance improvements right away, that's why I always change the oil when it hits 3,000 miles and I always use full synthetic and knn oil filter. People always say it's ok to wait 7,000-10,000 miles when using synthetic and even if the owners manual says so, do you really want oil in there for so long? especially when it's not that expensive if you do it yourself, walmart is the cheapest place I found Mobil 1 full synthetic (5 qt jugs)

Go by your manual. The engineers that built and tested your engine know fathoms more about your engine than anyone on this forum. My understanding is that Acura(Honda) uses special breakin oil that they actually want you to keep in your engine for several thousand miles before changing.

The days of changing your oil every 3000 have long past. Modern oil mixtures and filter tech has allowed for 5k to 10k oil changes without any problems whatsoever. I think BMW changes are at 7,500 or even 10,000 miles. People say "well it cleans up all the gunk that was left in your engine during manufacture and it's good to get it out as quick as possible". Wouldn't the company that warranties your engine for 60,000 miles recommend that if it were true? They don't want premature engine failures as they would cost them a mint.
