I have a rearview mirror mounted dash cam from DOD. It worked well but I didn't like it mounted on the mirror. I think I'd go with a windshield mounted cam in the future. I'll probably sell mine. There are a ton of them out there. It is a good idea, but they are not going to catch someone scratching your car unless they bump it hard and you have a cam that operates in that mode. Not all do. And you need to be careful you get one that won't drain the battery. Some will record anything that passes in front of the cam.

Here are some dash cam sites that are useful. DOD is a popular brand. Most of these are made in China or Korea.

Hi Rocket man, I was thinking of putting it in the rear windshield facing towards the front of my car so I can see everything from the doors. I should get the one that starts to record once it detects a moving object, but how does the battery work , because I want it to start recording when I leave the car for the night does the car have to be turned on or does it use battery.

If you place it in the rear looking forward it will not get a good view at all of where you are going. There are 2-camera systems that allow one cam to look forward and another to look back. Some of those mount in the rear glass, some look back from the front.

Most of the ones that will record movement or bumps after it has been turned off have a battery inside. But they will also need to be connected to an 'always on' circuit in the car that is powered by your battery. So if it gets activated enough it can drain the battery. A few vendors have a low voltage cut off that will disconnect the cam when the car battery reaches a certain low voltage.

There are many many options out there. Lots of research to do.
