Just picked up a 2017 Advance. I noticed that for blind spot assist to be on I have to press the button on the steering wheel every time I start the car. Shouldn't this be on by default? I haven't seen anything addressing this in settings.

We have a 2016 Advance and we don't have to do anything for the BSI to be active. Sounds like you need to change a setting -

Try this -

To change the alert type, or turn the system on or off. Use the interface dial to make
selections.
Press SETTINGS.
Select Vehicle Settings. The vehicle must be in
Park (P).
Select Blind Spot Info.
Select an alert type, or Off.
Press BACK to exit the menu.

I checked that, it is set to both alerts. When you start your car does the info display show what looks like lane markers on each side? Mine does not until I press the button on the steering wheel.

Was driving before and noticed no yellow alert on pillar when someone was in my blind spot. Then I found button on steering wheel.

 

I am an idiot! I wasn't going fast enough for blind spot to engage when I noticed no blind spot detection!

 

Ha ha - was going to mention that you need to be going 20+MPH for the BSI to work. Glad you figured it out.............

 

The button on the wheel and the lines/markers on the screen have nothing to do with the BSI. Those are for the LKAS.

 

Yeah figured that out! When I pressed that button earlier I must have cleared 20 mph around the same time and the bsi light came on, making me think I just turned on bsi!!

 

or you could do it old school and just turn your head....

How I wish we had had BSI on our '10 Crosstour! Poor rear and rear-quarter visibility. Worst case for us was this monster '84 Dodge Ram custom van with the curtains. Fisheye mirrors were a necessity. (No shag carpet or psychedelic lights, just captains chairs and a folding bed in the back for the kids (now 40 and 36) for cross-country travel.)

Anyway, after spinal surgery on my neck, my range of motion has not returned to full yet so the BSI is a huge help. That and rear camera with cross-traffic warning.

 

May I add something to this. If you are ding some summer driving and discover that your Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and LKAS are not working properly, check your windshield. Behind your rear-view mirror is a camera which is the heart of the ACC and LKAS. If there is a dead bug on your windshield in front of the camera's view it will/ may affect the operation of these electronic features. I learned this from personal experience and now carry a small bottle of water / a couple paper towels in my centre console. Wishing you all bug-free summer driving!
