Back to Acura 14 RDX

Hey guys I used to have a 2005 tsx here, now i'm back. My 2014 forester sadly took failed cvt. Subaru didn't want to help me cover it after being out of warranty.

Any suggestions what to check out first?

got a 14 rdx base with 43k miles on it. probably not going to do anything crazy to it since I'm only keeping the car till I get myself in a newer rdx or another suv in the next year =)

Man I really really like the look of the 2014 Subaru forester XT. But IMHO subaru going to CVT was the death of it. I love the way it looks and that it has symmetrical AWD with a boxer engine. Why could they have not put in a 6 speed auto at minimum in the XT model vs a POS CVT. While I like a lot of aspects of subaru's, I feel like their engineering team is really far behind (like in mitsubishi's league).

Well anyways, congratulations on the new purchase. At minimum Acura's engineering team is>>>>>subaru's.

I really loved the car the high torque cvt didn't sell me. I actually thought i'd been taken care of regardless of the problems, but they ditched my warranty so early because of high miles.

I loved my acura tsx, but at the time when I was looking acura didn't have too many sedans with awd, or rdx was a new platform with turbo still.
I'm not sold on the 14, but my friend is right take the car with the depreciation already and look into a car i'm going want to keep.

no 6mt for the fxt (turbo models) it comes with a high torque like in the wrx cvt, but honestly the high torque is why i had so many cvt problems
40k, leaky cvt gasket then 52k it was replaced. 62k the car seized, and cvt was replaced. 2nd cvt was making noise at 94k at my service check up.

Subaru was awesome for awd, but not their cvt =\ even though I didn't mind I had too many issues and subaru left me in the dark with a 8k repair. used transmission and labor about 3500 and rebuild is 3k. Still a lot of money to be for a 2014 (march2013) car.

I have a huge issue with manufacturers who match CVT's with turbo engines. CVT's use a fixed diameter metal or rubber belt with 2 oppositely opposed cones....turbos as you are obviously aware tend to have a very on off torque curve by nature. I.e max torque at 2K rpm (1100 in some newer cars). So the way I look at it, in a naturally aspirated engine torque builds slowly and the cvt belt has time to sort of adjust to it, but with a turbo and max torque right away, it probably puts a a lot of stress and strain on the belt.

Maybe I am off on that, but it is the way I look at it. All I know is that I will never buy a car with a CVT ever again after our 2006 Nissan Murano.

The 2014 RDX is nice because it is pretty simple, simple AWD, engine, electronics...etc. Out of curiosity, why was a 1G RDX not on the table?

So this was the noise I thought it was a belt or alternator / pulley but in fact is the cvt needing a replacement from Subaru

Whoa... after looking at your pictures I realize that Subaru can look good too.
You like really colorful wheels. Red, yellow. Good job anyway.

Speaking of CVT's, even tho I love my (new to me) RDX, I kinda miss the CVT in my Murano, only cuz of smoothness...... The upshifts during acceleration on the RDX aren't an issue, its more the downshifting as you coast towards a red light...my head actually moves forward sometimes during the downshift, especially as the vehicle slows around the 30 km/hour mark.

My MDX does this too and I agree, it tries to engine brake like crazy and it is the most irritating thing ever. Literally throws me in my seat. Something you can do to help negate it is to put your rdx in manual mode, it won't engine brake anymore and will shift down nornally.
