Automatic Transmission - At lower speeds

Have owned the 13'RDX for about 18 months now. Only have 6500 miles on it as dont get to drive it much. I have noticed that at lower speeds, especially when you are slowing down for a red signal, there is a sudden/abrupt down shift of the gears which make the ride rather jerky. I tried driving it in the manual mode and didnt feel the jerk at all.
This is what I feel is happening in the automatic versus the manual gear shifts I do, in automatic, when you start to slow down, the gear shifts from 3 to 2 to 1 and hence you feel the jerk. But when I am controlling it, it remains in 3 until I get to complete stop, at that point of time, it shifts it directly to 1.

Have anyone else noticed the jerky shifts at lower speeds or its just me. Does it need to be shown to the mechanic or would be improve if I drive the car more often and longer distances.

Thanks,
RDXed

I have noticed it in my car as well, but on a very mild scale. It doesn't bother me much. I doubt if it is going to change with time and/or longer distance running.

Mine does it too.It seems to do it more during the first 5 minutes, then it smooths out.I have learned to gingerly work the accelerator to lessen it.

I find that if I drive it more aggresive than I normally do,( I drive like it cost me a million dollars ) It smooths way out.

?

one of the 3 reasons (VCM and suspension being the other 2) why I got rid of my RDX. Really liked the reliability (not a single issue apart from jerky ride, VCM noises and subpar suspension) but could not live with these issues ...

... now, about the X3, they are in different classes. I can say that I find myself loving my ride again, the 8 spd is butter smooth at low speeds, and the 28i is nice and alive; suspension? sporty but not too uncomfortable. Excellent ride!!!

My 09 Pilot & now this car does this as well. I think it's the transmission shifting & the car going into 4/3 cylinder mode at the same time or back and forth is making this heavy shifting senasation. The Pilot had a ECO light to let you know when the car was in 4 cylinder mode, so this is how I know.

Comparably equipped, what's the price difference between the Acura and BMW?

You got me there, but you can always wait for the right moment (I did), and you also have to know what your priorities are (for me it comes down to ride quality at hwy and low speeds, peppiness [is that a word?], comfort, road manners and safety). Now, if long term ownership (+8 years) was a priority, I would have kept the RDX

Thank you, sounds like you made a good choice. I'm considering making a change too.

It seems at lower speed (0-25 mph) computer takes over the transmission and shift to a lower gear to keep rpm higher. It saves fuel and acts as engine break to save break pads.

I have the same issue on my 2013 awd tech, does not happen all the time, but often enough to be annoying. feels like i'm driving a stick shift, although I did a better job at shifting in my very first car.

It's a Honda thing, any cold Honda I've driven shifts poorly when cold. I've just learned to brace myself for when it shifts into second for the first time after a cold start.

that is not what I experience, it shifts poorly when it is nice and warm. I had owned 09 Pilot for 4 years and it shifted nice and smooth. Honestly, if my Pilot would have shifted poorly, I would probably stay away from Hond(A)s.
