Transmition question???

Well I'm afraid to ask,.....but I need some transmition help.

During all but WOT runs everything seems to be fine. At WOT it won't shift out of second into third. Once that happens, I need to slow way down, coasting, before it will go ahead and shift. It's only the 2nd to 3rd upshift at WOT that does this.

Any ideas?

so the revs would keep climibing in second and once you take your foot off the gas the car shifts into third?

I assume you mean in regular Auto mode, not SS ? If yes, try in SS. Get her to the dealer

It's not slipping though,..the mph is climbing with the revs. It's running good and tight right to the top, with no slipping, but just wont shift. Even when I let off the gas, it won't shift until it coast's way down, say maybe 2500rpm.

I can run it moderately hard with no problems. It's only WOT to the top when it happens. It does it in auto and gate shifting on the right. I haven't tried sportshift yet.

It happened a few weeks ago. I've put alot of miles on it without any problems, without wide open runs. I tried it again today to try to nail down more specifics. I'm not in a big hurry to get to the dealer with all the mods on it, but it might be better to face the music before I'm on the other side the world looking for a tow truck.

Correct, but only at the top of a wot run. I could run it up to 5k at half throttle, and it gate shifts no problem. It's like it get's stuck at the top, under heavy load, and will not shit untill it coasts way down.

Damn that is crazy. I wonder if this has anything to do with the clutch packs ?

Just to clarify, it happens while gate shifting, and in auto. I have not tried in the sportshift yet, but my guess is the same will happen.

I would think it would be slipping. It's like something is hung up in there.

I would assume that if gate is not working to correct the problem under WOT, then SS probably won't work any better.
Will it just hit the limiter ?

Yes, it bounces off the rev limit, then I coast, (engine break), and wait for it to shift when it gets to around 2.5-3k rpm.

had the exact same thing happen to me. I let off until it switched gears, tried again at WOT later in the day and it was fine and has been fine ever since (Sept. 03). I know the tranny is doomed though

That may just be a shift control solenoid. Have you checked the fluid?? It might not hurt to drain and refill the fluid.

That's encouraging news. Do you know your build date?

I dunno, I had this same thing happen early on in my '01 CL-S. It was in 2nd and slammed the rev limiter and would not shift until it dropped down some. The dealer found nothing wrong and the car survived 1.5 years longer of serious driving before I traded it in.

When the clutch packs start to wear out the solenoid(s) get clogged. (I'm sure you know this already)

Drain and refill might just prolong the inevitable.

However I suppose it is possible the solenoid is starting to fail on it's own. Or there is air in the system.

I wonder if his tranny fluid is burnt/dark/smells bad.

Yes, the fluid is full, and a clean 'red', You're right, changeing it couldn't hurt, and should probably be done anyways with my driving habits. It's so freekin cold here, I'll probably let the dealer have at it. I just cringe from the thought of taking it to the dealer,...no offense to the Acura Techs here,.... but shlt happens. The mod frienliness of the dealer will certainly be known.

True, which was why I asked abot the fluid. I recall hearing about a few people over the years who had similar problems and it ended up being just the solenoid(s).

Just hoping for the best...

It's a good sign your fluid is clean. Might not be failing

It is the shift control solenoid.

No, I would have to let off the throttle and eventually it would shift. It's very possible my solenoids were failing prior to the clutch pack wearing out.

Hopefully they can replace the solenoids for you. My tranny was very tempermental. It also wouldn't act up for the dealership. So I had to wait a bit before it went completely.

If you car slips between shifts (especially the 2-3 shift) it would be a sure sign of the clutch pack problems.

Hopefully you only need a new solenoid pack

But I know how you feel. Taking the car in for uncertain things like that really sucks. Especially when the dealship scratches their head. Hopefully they have "seen it all" at this point /w the automatics. And they'll have a speedy fix for you.

i doubt ur tranny is going brad, your build date is not affected by the bad trannys, when i drove ur car it shifted soo much smoother than mine does, prolly just a computer glitch or somethin, i'd take it to the dealer and check it out..

how does the tranny fluid smell??

It's not burnt. I'm hoping it's simple as i'm sure I will most likely be paying the bill on this one.

It happened to me a few times too. It happened once actually during a run down the 1/4 track during the last Acura Wars. It just kept banging off the rev limiter at the top of first gear and wouldn't shift to second.

The good thing was that it happened in November 02 and the tranny was fine until I sold the car in March 03

darrin, we'll see. 7.5 psi of boost,....? Not to mention the blower might be in the way. This could turn out to be a pain in the ass if they need to get under the blower.
