Transmission Question
Transmission Question
I was leaving work yesterday and I thought I would try to shave 20 minutes off my usual commute. Well when I turned off the street and on to a busy feeder I floored it bringing the RPM's up to probably close to redline. Well when it got that point the car just made a loud whining noise and didn't accelerate. It did this a second time after quick accelaration at a light. Is this a sign of the tranny going out?? Also the car jerks sometimes and it's starting to worry me. Any help would appreciated. Oh and I have an 01 Type S Auto if that matters.

Yup, sounds like the tranny is going. Bring it in now before it gets worse....

sounds like what mine did when it broke.
Hey, where are those video clips that someone posted? They depict very nicely how a broken tranny acts.
Make them put in a new tranny!!!!
The description you provided is called "flare" and is one of the symptoms that you should be concerned about. Take that sucker in ASAP. When the clutch packs fly apart on the early trannies, they dump particles into the passages and it is possible to have a failure that will cause the car to downshift at speed on the freeway.
Acura's owner's link page (a section related to the auto tranny warranty extension) specifically mentions the following problems as ABNORMAL:
"These characteristics are not normal; if you experience any of them, call your Acura dealer.
While driving, the D5 indicator on the instrument panel flashes.
* An abnormally loud noise from the transmission.
* Extremely slow or delayed gear engagement, upshifts, or downshifts.
* Abnormal gear slippage during upshifts or downshifts. (AKA -- also known as FLARE)
* Erratic or excessively harsh shifting.
* Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) leaks.
