Tip: Out of Warranty Transmission Repair
While most of us who are in need of a transmission repair will either be covered by the warranty or through goodwill assistance, there are some members who are either well past the warranty or own salvaged title vehicles. If someone falls into a situation where they are ineligible for goodwill assistance, instead of paying a dealership an obscene amount for a remanufactured unit, you should consider buying a remanufactured transmission off Ebay.
While looking for some parts the other day, I noticed that there was a dealership on EBay that is selling remanufactured transmissions from Honda's transmission program. These transmissions have a 3/36 warranty and include all of the latest updates. They only charge $1895 for a four-speed and $2095 for a five-speed and those prices include two-way shipping (delivery and core return).
If you have one of these units shipped to an independent shop, even after you figure $800 for eight hours of labor to R/R the old unit, this is much cheaper than some of the out of warranty repair quotes (from dealers) that I've seen posted on here. While the price may be similar to the cost of a rebuild from an independent shop, this route gives you a better warranty (in most cases) and a unit that has had all of the latest updates.
Hopefully someone will find this useful.
