Shift Points

So a recent thread about Detuning and what the Oil Jet kit actually did raised a good question. When Acura installs that do they flash the computer or anything? Are the shift points adjusted?

I was one of the people who noticed that I couldn't downshift as aggressively so I wanted to check it out. If I remember correctly, the manual says that the CL-S can downshift from 5->4 at 103, 4->3 at 93 and 3->2 at 65.

I tested it this weekend and what I found was I could not downshift 4->3 above 88 and 3->2 above 59. I didn't test 5->4.

Minor changes I guess but it's still between 5 and 10%. I'm assuming there's no power loss, but it really hurts when you want to get on it at highway (ok autobahn ) speeds and you have to slow down to drop it in 3rd and make all your power.

Oh - and the dealer told me Saturday that "there is no change."

Am I going crazy?

The problem with these trannies is their design, obviously. But Honda is doing things wrong my softening up the shifts. Look at Muscle car guys, they are always told to increase line pressure and shift firmness to extend tranny life. I'm not saying, lets make the trannies break your neck, although that would be cool as shit, but firm those shifts up a bit and i bet that the trans will last longer.

4->3 at 88?

Try more like 82 in my car, and 6300 RPM shift from first to second. It's a Type-S, too.

This started happening after a trip to the dealership. I didn't pay for a car that will shift like a pansy. It's not my fault that the transmission sucks ass. And if they're worried that my transmission will break, then I should be entitled to the extended transmission warranty. But noooo, mine's got the fix from the factory. Then why did they update my TCM?

Fuckers.

You are not going crazy! When the dealer changed my trans, they also changed the computer which was reprogrammed to make the trans less aggressive on up and down shifts. The Service Manager confirmed what I felt in the seat of my pants that the CL-S was made into a wimp-mobile to protect the trans. After the oil jet kit was installed, I didn't notice any further deteriation in the shifting. As I recall in previous threads discussing this topic, I mentioned that I felt there was a change in the aggressive shifting. All that responded said I was crazy. There was no changes.

Did you ask about having it corrected? To my eyes, they've made a fundamental change to the handling of the car without my authorization or knowledge. Long term this could create a niche market for "not oil jetted" cars if they have a more performance oriented tranny. (ok - so that's going overboard but the point is still valid)

When I accepted the replacement tranny, the authorization was implied. The tran's design is flawed. When Honda took the four speed and added the fifth gear without modifying the tran case, they created a heat problem within the trans. The fluid has a restricted flow and does not cool all of the clutch packs properly. Honda is interested in only one thing, getting me beyond the 100k warranty with a minimal cost to them.

I've had my trans replaced recently, and the only change is the shift between 2 and 3rd, which is the root of most problems...if you notice, between all other gears shifting is smooth, and redline is higher, but between 2nd and third, the transition is harsh. The redline has been lowered as well.I read the NHTSA report, and using what sense i had, i had to assume that the problem exists when people used the Automatic only, since it shifts or tries to get to top gear quickly. If you used SS, the problem didn't manifest itself quickly, as more fluid was being delivered. I think at this point in my opinion, they got it right, cause normally i can make the trans fail when i want it to by driving between 2nd and 3rd continuously. I've tried, and although the shifting between 2nd and 3rd is harsh, it's been bulletproof. It took them years, but i think they got it.

well i got it back and it seems, the trans didn't fail by itself, more like the car comp failed ( traction control, abs and check engine light all at once) causing all sorts of erratic shifting and poor engine performance...the 2 or so miles i drove it in this condition caused the trans to go bad, although after Acura corrected the car comp problem, it performed a little less than well...needless to say, they replaced everything to be on the safe side. Now after the replacement, a dramatic loss in power in noticed...
