Real Dirt Behind The Tranny Story

Hi all!

I don't own a CL (yet), but since I am planning to trade in my Civic for one, I decided to lurk around this fourm and get much info as I can.

I noticed the #1 beef with the CL is the weak tranny. Everyone has different theories as to why, ranging from drivers being too abusive, to faulty engineering.

I think I would have to go with faulty engineering. I have a 2001 Civic, and I am also on my 2nd automatic tranny. Here are the facts:

1) I baby my car. I rarely accelerate hard, nor do I "jam" it out of Drive and into 3rd or 2nd.

2) My car has NO torque. It's a 1.7L Civic LX. Nuff said.

Now, it originally seemed like I had a lemon. Until I got on a 7th Gen Civic fourm, and found a LOT of people with the problems. One guy I know is on his 3rd tranny.

Recently there were some heavy recalls with Accords as well in Canada, and the warrenty was kicked up to 160,000km on ALL cars.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm. It seems to me that a lot of Honda's new products are... coming out with bad trannies!! Weak, bad, poorly engineered, whatever you want to call it, Honda is not doing what they are supposed to be doing--making reliable cars.

I'll be frank.... I'm a Toyota fan. Had lots. My whole family. My first car, a shit-box Corolla, was abused like a junior hockey player. And I was the dirty coach. I did stuff to that autobox that I wasn't supposed to do. But it's STILL going, to this day. And that's just one car... I have stories of many more in the past of bulletproof Toyota trannies.

Now, I didn't come on here to start a Honda vs Toyota discussion at all, so I'll move on. I guess what I am really wondering is if I should consider CL as my next car or not... just want to get your honest opinion.

I don't know about USA, but in Canada, the current CLs have horrible resale value. Good for me, because I am definitely planning to buy used.

There's a lot of good deals, but one I saw in particular was exceptionally good--2001, 25,000km (about 15,000mi) for $24,000CDN (about $15,000USD).. silver with black interior.. 6disc changer, blah blah blah... what a deal!
