Help! I'm looking to buy a used 2001 Acura CL Type S and had no clue about this transmission thing until I read the threads- the transmission has already been replaced (the car has 80k now) and is under the 100k warranty. The front brakes have also been replaced- is this a risky buy??? I'm not wanting to have to be one of those 3,4 and 5 tranny suckers! Regardless of warranty!

replacing tranny with rebuilt not new tranny
the dealer is going to replace the transmission in my 01 CLS with a rebuilt tranny. Is there any way I can get him to put in a NEW transmission? I requested a NEW transmission. He says only rebuilts are available.

Auto Tran experiences
Here is my eexperience(s) with the auto trans. I have an 03 CL-S and supposedly it doesn't suffer from some of the concerns of years 02 and earlier although I'm not convinced yet.
I have 18,000 miles on mine so far and took it into my dealer a few weeks ago as I was experiencing a slight hiccup between gears around 30 mph while the car was warming up. Once warmed up this occasional hiccup does not happen. This happened during one tank of gas and hasn't happened since and never happened before. I also had the oil jet kit installed at 15,000.
I left it with the dealer overnight so they could test drive it cold and of course it didn't happen so they said the transmission is OK. In discussions they said if they do have to replace a transmission they order a "new" one. They don't fix them and they don't install rebuilts. I don't know if that is because my car is still well under the warranty or if it is regardless of the age and mileage of the car but that's what they said.
I don't know if that helps you but this is as of last week when I visited the dealer.

I guess you didn't read the message real well. I don't have a 2001 CL and I haven't been through any transmissions yet. I'm telling what the dealer said to me so maybe you should call them and tell them their incorrect.

Well that's 3 opinions we have. If we wait, I am sure we can get thousands more. I am not sure who to believe so I am not believing anyone.
But to the point: I do not think that they have fixed the core problem - to the best of my understanding. thus, what does it matter if it is a new or a rebuilt trans. Depending on your driving or your luck, the same flaws exist. I got mine to go 72,000 miles on the first trans. Pretty good in my case. I think it has to do with your driving type. Some get less, some get more. go figure.
If I move to Canada do I get the 160,000 km warranty?

FYI
Took my '01 CLS(purchased new in 06/2000) into Dealership on Thursday(10/02), with increasing occasions of tranny shift slip and certain non-engagement issues. I did the prescribed homework before, by running the VIN # and bringing down the maintenance records.
Acura/Honda over-nighted the reman. tranny and under the settlement warranty, replaced the pressure regulator(FP - 16740-PGK-A01RB), ECU(FP - 37820-PGE-315RM), Warranty A/T KI(FP - 06200-PGF-090RM), 5 QTS ATF-Z1. The prescribed work was done and picked up the CLS on Saturday(10/05). Honda/Acura will only issue reman. trannies under the settlement warranty and this warranty covers the "new" tranny up to 109,000 miles.
In the end, the experience cost me just to fill up the tank of the free loaner TL, while the work was done. 0 out-of-pocket cost for the tranny work.
I will say for us, as much as my wife loves the CLS and has been her utmost favorite, we will be trading up to something else sometime next year. The loaner TL we had, didn't hold a candle to our '01 CLS and since we have drove the RL, that vehicle would be the top choice for replacement from Acura to replace the CLS. She does have her eye on other makes also, so we'll see which it will be.
I hope this tranny experience is useful to all...

160,000 km = 100,000 miles. in canada, they use metric system for speed and distance.

Transferable warranty...?
I have a 2003 CLS in my sights, with 56,000mi. I take it this extended warranty (7yr/100,000mi) follows the car? If I read this thread, along with the extended warranty information, correctly, a remanufactured tranny would be installed if the 2003 CLS has more than 3yr/36,000mi on it.
Thanks for looking out...AcuraZine members!

Transmission warranty for Acura Certified CLs only...?
Is it true that the extended warranty only applies to CLs that are Acura certified? I have a 2003 CLS (less than 50,000mi) in my sights, but the Acura dealership representative stated that it was only covered for the 4 years.

See here if your VIN qualifies.

The Owner Link cite indicated that 'Your 2003 Acura is included in the 00-04 CL & TL A/T RECALL Campaign.' The status indicated 'Fixed'. I hope this wasn't a cruel attempt by that Acura dealership to buy the CLS from under me. Thanks for looking out, JohnBlayz142!

What has been the overall success rate of getting non-covered 2003 models, which have failed in the exact same way, to be covered?
About a month ago, my 03 started to buck, and slam into gear, and I stopped driving it. I ended up purchasing a 1990 Volvo wagon to get around, and the dealer I've been talking to says that even though the symptoms are recall-like, my vehicle isn't covered by the extended warranty, and thusly, I've got about a 50% chance of Acura not accepting it, and being up a creek without propulsion, so to speak.
Anyway, I know some have had success, and some haven't. I've been reading, and just wanted to know about how much chance it has of being taken care of?
Thanks!

Hey I just bought an 03 CL about 3 weeks ago and I checked my vin on the website. I am on the recall list. I have 82,000 miles on the car and the tranny feels good. Do I need to wait until I get a letter in the mail? Can I just take in on my own? Does this apply when buy the car used? Thanks.....

109k
This might be a BUT
the 109k warranty is only not on the tranny....
....its 109k on your odometer... so if you get a tranny at 108k on your ODO... you have just 1,000 miles until your warranty is DONE...
I know b/c my car is at the shop with its second tranny (got it at 58k) and now I have 126k on the ODO and Acura wants $4k to fix it...

Well my car is going in for a ATF change tomorrow as the dealer wants to do that first to see if it fixes anything since the fluid is brown and low when I checked and called them. However it may not even make it there now cause tonight I was driving and in drive and it just started reving and not going anywhere so I had to put it in d3 for it to move. So I might have lost final gear in it now but havent tried it again yet since getting home. Not sure if I am even going to trust getting it to the dealer now.

i got my tranny replaced in october of 2007 and they said the warranty is good for up to 109,000 miles or 1 year, which ever comes first. Did honda just decide to do this recently? or is it something you have to purchase?

My tranny went out last week with 76k 03 CL-S. The tranny was either fixed or replaced by the first owner. Now David Mc David Acura in Austin called Acura USA on by behalf and got me a "deal" to pay them $500.00 for another transmission. When I mentioned that I have a letter some where around the house that tells me my car is covered to 100k he says "I would advise you NOT to call Acura because they might renige on the deal we made for you. WTF!
Bottom line...Does anyone know is the 03 auto is 100% covered? The link that was posted to Acura only states "fixed".

If Acura wasn't using 3rd party rebuilds, we wouldn't be in such a fix... a local shop rebuild with the rite parts is all love, but I have no idea who is doing them for Acura (SHADY TOWN pawn and trannys)... and you can ask until you are blue in the face and nobody knows a thing...
PS:...dont do the trans flushes and they will act like you brought a ford truck to the acura service dept... just FYI

I just bought an 01 CL (not type s) with 88k miles on it....should I be less worried about the tranny failing because it is not the type s or equally worried? since I am not the original owner I don't even know if I have a warrantee and I am not at all in the position to pay for a tranny if mine breaks....should I just get rid of it while I can??? feeling dumb that I din't research this before I bought the car....any input greatly appreciated

2001 CL-S with 103k miles - My tranny just went out. The original tranny was replaced with 34k miles on the car. Am I screwed, or does this tranny fall under the warranty? Is the warranty 109k miles or 100k miles? I have seen both figures...?
Thanks for your help!

my first post, hello everyone, being my first time here should be about pleasure not finding out the tranny will fail
anyway, I'd like to say thanks to all who contributed here, for all the great info, I registered mine online, looks like the first recall was done (the one inspecting the tranny and adding a jet kit or whatever is called ) so now I have an appointment with the local dealer to get my tranny looked at.
Just wondering, have ALL of you paid for the diagnostic? I didn't see anyone mentioning that but that's what the dealer told me, it starts at $65 and may go up...does this extended warranty NOT cover this part where they look at it?
