I'm glad I read this board b4 going to get my CLS but I wonder if other car owners w/ powerful cars and automatic trannies have this issue as well? Supras? 300ZX TTs? it seems other companies have mroe experience in building powerful cars w/ trannies that can handle that power than Honda...

Toyota is probably the best as far as tranny reliability, this comes for lexus.
They even give 70K miles power-train warranty

I think a lot of it has to do with Japanese cars' trannies not being able to support the large horses under the hood. I read a few cases of the Infinity G35 having blown trannies.

I used to own an IS300 with I/H/E S-AFC and a 125 shot of nitrous. I ran it hard and sprayed a bottle a week for about a year with no problems. The only thing that i would note is that the IS300 tranny is slow shifting, it would regularly hit the rev limiter while spraying. My Type-S shifts perfect, even on the juice.

I support the theory that until recently, Japanese did not know how to build powerful mainstream passenger cars. Powerful sports cars like Supra, 300ZX, NSX - yes. Powerful Accords and Camries - no.
Now they decided to jump into the horsepower game. They have figured out how to make more power from their engines. But it seems that they did not do their homework with automatic transmissions.
Actually Toyota is still being quite conservative with the Camry - the new one is not that powerful. Toyota probably knows that they cannot make a powerful Camry and maintain the same levels of reliability.

I'd really like to get a Lexus based on their reputation but unfortunately they don't make anything that I want. Well, let me clarify, they don't make anything in my price range that I want. The IS300 is too small and the ES300 is really nice but it's not sporty enough for me. The GS300 suffers the same fate as the ES300 in terms of performance and it's also time for a redesign for that model anyway. The GS430 has the performance but it too (of course) is ready for a redesign and it's too damn expensive.

GM tranny in the GTP is rated up to 280lbs*ft torque, reliably.
