Dilemma about Tranny

I haven't had any problems with my original tranny so far, but I'm wondering if I should do something to get it replaced before the extended warranty expires.

All the bad tranny talk has got me all paranoid.

What would you guys do? Either keep the original and hope it doesn't go bad after the warranty OR do whatever it takes to get a dealer to replace it hoping I get a good "fixed" tranny that won't have the problems everyone is talking about with the original trannys.

Sorry, but there's no way you'll be able to convince your dealer to replace your tranny just because. I'm sure Acura will take care of us even if the tranny goes after the extended 100k warranty has expired.

Acura/dealer won't do anything until you are stranded on the side of the road .. when it happens make sure you put up your "Thanks Acura" sign in the rear window for all to see....

If the 5AT tranny fails because of bad design and bad parts, how come all of them don't fail? Somehow most trannies magically hold up?

By do "anything", I mean "anything". There's always something that can be done to make something not work, right?

I just don't know if I'll end up better or worse off if I replace a tranny that didn't have a problem to begin with to avoid a potential $5K repair out of my own pocket when the extended warranty expires.

It's funny, but I can't help think of George W. as I'm writing this. It's like a pre-emptive strike!

Only 2-5% of all the trannies fail. It would be stupid to purposely attempt to break it. You would most likely break something else in the process.

If you're that paranoid, why not drive the car into a tree and replace it with a new one. It does indeed sound like something George W. would do. YMMV

So when Acura released the numbers on the failures there were 1.2 million possible cars affected, and the number they released was 2% failure rate.

Let's make this scenerio worse... let's use that same 1.2 million (I know... it's higher now.. but work with me). Ok, so we'll use that same 1.2 million number, but instead we'll say the failure rate was 5%. If you do the math you'll see that it effects 60,000 cars out of 1.2 MILLION. And that's all cars affected... so it includes the Odessey, Accord, CL, and TL. I think that's it... basically any car with the 5 speed auto tranny. When you actually think about it... the numbers are clearly on your side.

Don't be so paranoid.... just enjoy the car. The odds are that you will not have any problems. The odds are also that if you did happen to have a problem after 100k, Acura would take care of you. But no dealer is going to replace a good tranny... especially when that tranny could be 1 of 1,140,000 trannies that will never have a problem.

As for DivinDude's comment.... sounds to me like your dealer sucks. My dealer replaced my tranny after the first sign of slippage.... they didn't wait for anything worse to happen.

I would not recommend doing this, although I doubt there is anyway to tell some ways of causing failure, and some are more obvious. But if you are hell bent on trashing it, well read the NHTSA reports on the failures, it will tell you what causes them, and if you can understand that, you should be able to understand how to "accelerate" the failure (but I sure as hell am not gonna be involved in something this outlandish). BUT I WOULD NOT DO THIS. I mean my transmission felt funny to me at 5k but it was nowhere near failure, and even at 38 when I said it was funny they couldn't find anything wrong with it. . . then again it did fail at 43.7k and again at 44.8k.
