CL Bad Tranny VIN Check
They have taken a poll on the Acura-tl site and I think we should do the same thing.
Please reply to this post with the last 6 digits of your VIN and your manu date and if your tranny has failed.
Here is the list of those of you that have reported bad Trannys:

TL-S Tranny Problem, VIN Number Check UPDATED
Everyone keeps worrying about these tranny problems, but for some reason it seems to only affect those of us who got their TL-S's in March/April.
Here is a list of those 19 members who have posted and had their tranny's replaced (only those with a 2002 TL-S). If any of these members want to chime in with their VINs, we can see if there is a sequence or trend in the numbers.
I know some don't like to give out VIN numbers, but what's the big deal. Someone could walk by your car and look on the dash!
I will append this message with the VINs if these members let us know their numbers. All we need is the last six numbers (I think)
(000274) Mr.T, (000725) oblio98, (002292) Redlined, (002849) FVFFC, (002917) Yoyodyne, (003657) Danuary, (003667) smelly, (004251) Sleeperz6, (004333) yelgen, (004414) rmarin2
TypeS, Evan Eaton, ginelewicz, Nate579, Dr.Bear, Dolemite, ssk0771, dondada, wjhuff3
I realize that some of these guys may never be back, but let's see what we get for a pattern.

This should probably be sent over to the tranny land forum...
I do agree that they found enough bad ones to repeat this...
Here is the back link to the Acura TL site
http://www.acura-tl.com/forum/showth...0&pagenumber=1
(There sure seems to be a lot of funky transmission with 2nd-3rd gear "flare" (slipping) problems before the dreaded tranny dirt nap happened...)
(IMO -- I think they really did get a batch of bad bearings [name your part here] and didn't Q/A them or didn't think they needed to...)

Yeah, I meant to say that we should move this to the Tranny forum, but it appears folks don't look at that one as much, as EricL was the only one to comment on my post over there.

Well, I think you have a good idea... I do think Chod (as I mentioned) and others had done some surveys like: 1) did you drive your car hard to break your tranny 2) when did you purchase your car if your tranny broke 3) give me your VIN # of your tranny (and did it break) 4) how many have good or bad trannies, how many have you had replaced, etc…
It seems interesting that the TLS people have a "concentration" of Mar/Apr 01 build date tranny failures; I thought that the failures here were more "random", but given the concentrations on TLS, it would probably help to get the current "dead"/MIA tranny count for the CLS folks...
A description of the failure symptoms (flare[slipping], drag, etc) would be useful too...

Add my name to the list...............Just got my car back last friday with a new tranny. I bought it 10/00 and had 26.3xxx miles.
Since blown trannies are getting up in the numbers, just like scratched rims, I think we need to initiate a "Blow Tranny Club". I nominate myself as president. Do I hear any other votes??

For your build number, look at the last 5 digits of the VIN, this is your build number. This is more useful than the date you bought it, etc. This gives a more clear idea of the time period cars are having problems. If we see 95% of problems fall between build numbers 10000 and 15000, then we know that's when there must have been some kind of problem at the factory.

Ok.. My transmission went out as well...
my VIN 016285, bought it in 8/00, built in 7/00
Ok.. so I take it to Oakland Acura (where I originally bought it) and complained of "rough shifting" which it was... moving between 3-4 and 4-3 gear at between 2000-3000 rpms.
Oakland Acura's solution was to replace the ATF. Well that worked for about 500 miles and then bamn. I got nailed hard with even worse rough shifting. Not only did the same problem above appeared, during a stop it would dis engage the transmission very rough and also doing a manual downshift from 3-2 would make it rev very hard.
Then my engine lights turned on, VSA was turned off, my sportshift stopped working at this point. Car was acting pretty sickly already... drivable, but barely...
Now I'm stranded 160 miles from home and left my car at Sunnyvale Acura in Oakland to let them figure out this problem. The service advisor said he'll call me later today to figure if I needed a new transmission, oh I only drove the sucker 27,800 miles.
THIS SUCKS.

Comment -- so far, it seems that the CLS' have a rather random tranny failure to build date.
The TLS vehicles seemed to have a large lump of failures around MAR/APR 01.
