100K + goodwill Dealer replacement or not.
i just bought a 03 cls with 50000 miles on it and before i bought it i did a car fax and no tranny was replaced so today i dropped it off at the dealer they called me back and said the tranny failiure has nothing to do with ththe recall and its about 4600 for a new unit so i said ok i called acura corporate and got in touch with a case manager guess they called the dealer and later on in the day dealer called me saying they took pictures of the gear and sent it in to acura so im wating to hear back from them tomm and see what happens i duno what i should maybe bitch see what happens and need a car anyone got any ideas or have been there in the past on what i should do or am i screwed
I have a 2001 CL and its transmission was rebuilt at 100k miles under warranty. I currently have 186k miles and its starting to act weird. There's like a 5~10% chance that I will experience slight vibration and jerking either before or after upshift, typically in 3rd or 4th. I am anticipating for the worse and started to ask around for solutions. If I rebuilt my transmission again and get 86k miles out of it, I am quite happy actually. During this 5 years of driving, I drove kind of crazy always using sportshift and tire burn...I do regularly service tranny fluid at 15k mile interval. It's a pity acura has this tranny problem nothing else ever breaks down.
A bit over 102,000 and my CEL's on for my transmission. It's been shifting hard and staying at 3k RPM in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear for 5 minutes after I turn the car on. Will try for a goodwill replacement soon ..
.... Im thinking of doing the 07 TL trany swap wish me luck ppl
I'm looking to buy a car and was seriously considering an Acura CL or Honda Accord, but don't want to buy into a tranny problem. What years are affected by the trans problems? If I buy a 2005 or newer am I safe?
Thanks
Thanks
Dealership = Lame!
I bot my 2001 CL-S in July of 2000. Replaced the tranny under warranty about three years ago. It died again 6 months ago. I paid cash for the thing and had all the maintenance done at the dealer for the first 50,000 out of now 80,000 miles. When I called Rosenthal Acura in Gaithersburg Maryland, they let me know where I could stick my busted tranny. They agreed to pay 0% towards a replacement.
Tranny (Rebuilt)
My tranny started acting up on me back in 2008 while I was in the PO Academy when the dealer told me $3000+ for it i was like
NO WAY!!! so i rebuilt it with a guy my uncle recommended and since then no problems... I say sometimes is better to rebuilt than get a new one...

I bought my 2002 CLS from Ron Tonkin Acura in Beaverton with 115k miles. Months after I bought it I found out about the problems with the cl tranny. When the tranny died, i took it back to them, but they wanted to charge $4k for the replacement.
Don't do business with these crooks at Ron Tonkin Acura in Beaverton

sorry to revive an old thread but this one is dealing with my problem
i have a 2001 CL TypeS with 111K miles on it
the other day i picked up the car from the body shop, after it sat there for a week and a half
on the way home it staggered the D5 flashes, VSA came on, engine light came on..i stopped and turned it off
on restart only the engine light was on but about a km down the road went thru the same problems as above
i had it towed to the body shop they checked it and code P0715 came up
they cleared it and drove it and was fine
i took it back and few kms away it started doing the same as the day before
a tranny shop tells me that everyone they talked to does not replace the speed sensor indicated by the code but rather the whole tranny
i need advice what to do...would the speed sensor fix it, do i try getting a deal out of my dealer for a new tranny or just cut my losses and sell it "as is"?
any help will be greatly appreciated

2001 CL Type S - 3rd owner, 57,517 miles
My trans went on Monday, December 5th.
I took it to Acura of Portland, Oregon and the original quote was $5,544 to replace the trans and ECM/PCU. I spoke to them about assistance based on the low mileage and they referred me to Acura/Honda USA. They called, I called, total waste of time.
Jeff and some other former car salesman gave me a raft of crap about the number of times it had been to the dealership even after I provided them with a detailed maintenance summary. I’m an x military mechanic, specializing in fuel and electrical component repair, so fluid changes, etc. were all done by me and I take excellent care of this vehicle. I still resent them insinuating that my vehicle was not maintained properly. I kept on referring them back to the mileage, not a hell of a lot of maintenance is required on a vehicle purchased in 2004 with 39k and driven 18k in 7 years. Didn’t mean a thing to them, they just said it was out of warranty and basically told me to go pound sand.
At the end of the day, it Friday, December 9th and I have a rebuilt trans that cost me $4,100+. No new ECM/PCU, which was my option, with a 3 year warranty. Dealership did what they could by allowing me to cash in gold points accrued earlier and for the trans job, knocking $500 off the total.
Advanced Engineering my ass. This transmission was a turd from day one. They knew it and those of us who took steps to keep our mileage low are now screwed by Honda who will not stand behind their design failure.
My son who dropped me off at the dealership took me there in his Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel which just turned 317k adding a bit of salt to my wounded wallet.
Last Acura or Honda vehicle or product I will ever own. Looks like it time for a Camaro.

Curious about the ECM/PCU issue.
Did the dealer say it was necessary and strongly recommend, or just suggest it would be more compatable to the reman. than your original. Any information you can provide in how and why you declined would be much appreciated. Also curious that they still gave you a 3 year warranty, even with the original ECM/PCU.
2002 CL/S, second owner. 45,000 miles. It hasn't eaten itself yet but sent a brief and very definate message the other day.

Service manager told me the PCU/ECM used to be replaced under the warranty along with the trans., so they just did it with each. No that the customer has to purchase it for $1,500 they give you the option and I was told they had never has one cause problems. Service manager also told me it would have no effect on the 3 year transmission warranty.
Now for an update:
I picked the car up on Thursday, Dec. 8th from the dealership. Drove home and drove to work Friday, no problems. Saturday my wife and I drove 25 miles to pick up my Dad, went to leave and VSA, !, and check engine lights all came on. Had to drive it, with the check engine light on, 25 miles back to Portland and another 10 to the dealership. Service manager, pulled a code #P1773. I was told "they had never seen this code before" and would have to call Acura tech to find out what it meant. He reset the check engine light and reassured me it was ok to drive. So I left and drove home.
On Sunday I pulled out of the gargae to wash it. When I pulled in back in the gargage the VSA, !, and check engine lights all came on. In addition the D5 transmission indicator was now flashing.
Now it sits in my garage awaiting instructions from Acura.
What a pain in the ass. You watch, I don't have a clue what they are going to tell me, but I bet they tell me I must replace the PCU/ECM for the additional $1,500.

Any update with your transmission troubles?
Also, was that a re-built or a factory reman that you had put in. My dealer won't install a reman without a new PCM and they only offer one year on the warranty, one of the issues I'm haggling about.

There's still hope left for goodwill towards a transmission replacement. I just got home from the dealer after having a factory new reman and a new ECU/PCM installed.
All in, I ended up paying 45% and Acura picked up 55% however I did have a strong case and, as always, YMMV.

I have a 2002 cl with 248,000 miles on it. Acura "Fixed" the transmission as per there records. I'm not the original owner. There is no oil jet repair done to the transmission. So as I understand from the recall and reading here. I think transmission was replaced? I am still going to get an odyssey trans and sit on it until needed. I would never rebuild after hearing the horror stories you guys go through.
Also why do the dealerships give you crap? They are making money on all of these repairs. The only difference is the just bill Acura for the repair. They also charge the full amount of time to Acura for the repair even if they got it done in half the time.
