EricL... great feedback, thanks for sharing! I pay attention to the verbage myself. I am attaching the copy of my manual, it does not say 'up to'.. it is quilte clear re. the 'alleged' performance. I realized now that this topic came up before, and actually surprised that although quite a few folks are 'emotional' about it still, either I've missed or haven't noticed anyone addressing this with Acura direct. At the time when we attempt 'overtake' 'another', we think/react/decide in milliseconds rather then seconds, so confirming the highly unintuitive way of shifting vs. the otherwise efficient shifting.

I will test it out and share details later. I am curious as to how '01s compare with '02s and '03s, since Acura confirms they changed the manual wording, to 'regular' 93mph downshift, even for CL-S. Gate shifter is a great idea, although might be a bit cumbersome at the time of the immense 'need to respond' - yet if works... I'd accept it with my open arms .

I see this thread continues ... To those being childish & ignorant... First I'd like to thank you, although your rebuttals do not hold ground... I shall awaken when someone provide worthwhile arguments in an older then a 7-year old fashion . The ones whom I am talking about should apply to Acura HQ Customer Service, since they say most anything to AVOID THE REAL ISSUE -- You are welcome for the Friday humor . I am glad you guys are not engineers... or perhaps you guys are and designed CL-S transmissions... I am on a roll here ..!!!

Imagine reading in your owner manual that you CL-S is a v6.. yet in reality it would be a v5... with a 'Oops' we missed a cylinder - this is very similar to my claim... Also, each gear is 'designed' to utilize the HIHGEST engine output, before switching, if it doesn't, the 260hp/232 torque is meaningless... and it is FRAUD.. no matter what anyone says about safety. Please do not confuse the two issues. If the ones still speculating about safety as an argument - you have no idea re. what specs truly are.

But even forgetting above for a bit... the MOST mind-boggling question is WHY Acura is acting as some 'childish' here.. i.e. WHY not inform the customer of 'how' the downshifting is truly operating ?????????????? They can't. Probably because there is a software 'defect', i.e. noone confirmed downshifting at 104 as of yet... with letting go off gas or tapping on the brakes. And this is FRAUDELENT, no matter how you put it.

Lastly... do you know how much BS I had to 'sift' through before winning against Honda last time ? This is no different... a practice really... So the SMUT-ASSES... DO YOUR WORST ... I eat you guys for lunch ...

To the great bunch of folks here... if there is something you truly believe in.... I implore everyone, including ACURA... to do the RIGHT THING... Deliver on your promises.. baby, or at least ADMIT the problem..!! I have a 7/100 Acura care contract ... so this is Marriage as far as I am concerned ... [hear... Acura ??]

Car will not shift into 5th gear under WOT because car will hit speed govenor at 147mph while in 4th gear so there is no need to even shift into 5th fear

5th gear is spec'd for at least 240mph if you could redline in that gear :P

I know the Type S isn't the normal Camery you used to drive but hey, who are you kidding? The Type S isn't a special racing machine like the Ferraris or the supercars that corp. hand-make their cars for racing and hardriving purposes. You currently own a 01 Type S. The early year of the 2nd Gen CL model. The specifications of a automobile has a standard deviations of error like any machine that is factory built and not throughly tested at every speed level and rpm level. Any mass targeted and profiting automobile corporation design their vehicles for normal driving that is usually at or below 75 mph in most large cities. Also factors of city driving and highway driving are included in their design and testing. The CL is thus designed for Comtemporary Luxury with many luxury features that add weight and take power away from your vehicle. Speed and the function of a automobile has alot to do with total weight of the car when driven, the driver, and engine temp, oil temp, oil pressure, air/fuel ratio, even to the nitty gritty of the tire pressures and outside temp. The CL is not an all out beast that can take a beating 24/7. It was designed and engineered for the population that would use the car for daily driving and speeds that are government regulated.

To my knowledge, the 01 and 02s tl and cl and other Honda transmissions are having problems. You may be just harming the transmission with your driving condition. Honestly, I doubt ANY car would have any problems with proper maintainance and care. Ex. Stop entirely after you back out in reverse before you switch to D5. this also applys to manual cars. This is hard motion for transmissions and that goes for excess gear switching in auto cars also. you will soon smell your transmission when you forget to press the circulation button in your dash. Love the CL for how it was designed; accurate dynographs show 260 bhp there and clear, maybe lower for whp, about 210-200 and these numbers are recorded at peak and the car's full potential of power. Enjoy that you have all the luxuries of a high-end vehicle but with the potential to show your rear lights to Mustang GTs, Scion TCs, WRX (not sti), stock rx-7, most eclipses, hang with domestic v6s and v8s that have higher liters...etc These are all achieved through the full potential of the Acura CL type S minus the driver. Baby your CL, don't race it or drive so hard with it all the time, anyone with passion for their vehicle knows ultimately it is harming your engine and drivetrain. I would love to boost my CL but I know my car will let go before 160,000 miles on the odometer. Sorry, for the long reply but something to do while I was intoxicated and listening to Bone Thugs and Harmony. By the way I don't have a doctorate but I know life works and fortunately I have financially succeeded enough to purchase a Type S. best of wishes to all yall, we have more shit to worry about like the war in Iraq and how the domestic and foreign policies will affect us and then wake up the next morning to go to work and come home a family. if you have the money and want a family fit car that is good for passing wheelers at 90+ buy a Evo 9 MR custom boosted to 15 psi at daily driving with 100 shot of wet if you think you can't make it before another car comes toward you. If you get another 800k deal then get a Ferrari Enzo that has the most sophisticated F1 style paddle shift drivetrain system all explained at your local Orange County luxury car dealer.
