Wheel offset modification, is it possible ?

Gentlemen, as far as you know, is it possible to machine an aftermarket wheel to a specific offset ? I'd like to buy some 18x8 wheels with a 40mm offset (all of TSW are this way ). I was wondering if removing about 5-8 mm of material on the wheel is an option (I have access to a CNC turning machine) .

I'm worried about the integrity of the wheel as well as it's flatness, etc

Does it sound crazy enough to work ??

Maybe this thread belong in wheels&tires, but the main forum gets more traffic !!

Maybe Ronjon could help me on this ?

You can do it. But not 5-8 mm. Maybe 3 mils.

The thing is that you are shaving the mounting plate. And the lugs hold the wheel in place because the opening at the plate is only a little bigger than the lug bolt. There is a "lip" that allows the lug nut to hold the wheel in place. The more you shave off the back, the smaller that "lip" becomes. And this will affect the integrity of the wheel.

Call TSW and see if they sell blanks. Then you can have them custom made to the offset that you need.

That's way too much to machine off. It would probably affect the structural integrity of the wheel.

By the way, my inner fenders are going to be rolled completely before the paint job so maybe that could help.

here are wheels I'd like: http://www.discounttiredirect.com/di...w=8&bp=5-114.3

you should call tsw, and see how much padding is available to shave. You probably will only get about 3mm like RaviNJcls said. If you shave to much like 8mm it will break into the lug holes and compromise the wheel. If your fenders are rolled you shouldn't have an issue.

I just went on to the TSW website and according to it you can get those in a 20mm-45mm offset

You can do anything, if it's safe is a whole new issue.

Yeah, the site mentions that the offset is available from 20 to 45, but not for every width and bolt pattern. The offset and bolt pattern we need is only available in either a 20 or 40 offset. I'll try to find some people who machined their wheel for the same reason and see if they ran into serious problems. If they didn't, I think I'm going to roll my fender and machine the hub as much as I can without affecting the lug seat and go for it. I'll keep you updated if I ever succeed....or fail miserably....
