Wheel Offset HELP!

I am looking to buy some wheels for my car... I just want to get 17x7 stock size so my tires fit. My question is what wheel offset do i need?

Will 38mm or 40mm work?

Someone told me they would and then some else told me I needed 45-55mm offset?

Some please help that knows for sure?

I want wheels that will work without making any mods to my car.

You may get away with lower, if you NEVER plan on having a lot in your trunk or lowering it.
