What's the correct/ best tire pressure PSI?

Hey guys,

Usually, I keep all my 4 tires dead on around 30 PSI. This measurement taken as cold reading of course.

I understand having a tire properly inflated is important to both safety and MPG. I'm going on a long trip starting tonight. I'll be carrying 4 people plus a trunk full of luggage. Expecting the weight to come in the 4000 - 4500 LB range total.

Should I increase the PSI per wheel to 35? What do you use and what do you recommend for me?

Thanks buds.

What tires? & size? It's going to depend on that. At the least you should set the pressure to the PSI on the door jamb. I don't think it's 30psi. I thought it was 32?
Then you can adjust it to your needs. I keep mine at 38psi because of the tires I have.

What do you guys follow if you have aftermarket wheels? Instead of the 215/50/17 tires, I have 225/40/18 and I just do what the max on the tire sidewall says, which is 44psi cold. I want good mpg and these tires are pretty sticky. No handling problems yet but Im just worried about handling problems later or uneven wear.

That is the max pressure that tire can handle. It's not the correct pressure to use.

As I said start with the stock rating then adjust to your road, & driving conditions.
Some tires give you a better ride with higher PSI some don't. Some wear better at some PSI's some don't. You have to find the balance.

well if i was running stock setup then i would be around 32-35. But im running 225/40/18. lower profile tires so i have no idea what to run other then the max PSI. but ill let the air seep out of it until it gets to the mid 30's.
but with the lower profile tire, i wanna keep the tires pretty stiff to save my rims from bumps.

Roads in TO are horrible......i'm scared to drive in now with my new wheels. So you're dropped now....lets see some pics. We'll have to arrange a meet up again sometime in august.

Running at max psi is a really bad idea. Especially if that is cold inflation pressure. Bear in mind that tire pressures will increase 1-2 psi for every 10F increase in temp. Which means your 44psi cold, could mean 48-50psi after a nice hard run. Which can be close to the burst pressure.

Without knowing your exact setup, I would only venture to guess that something in the 35 range would work. At least it cannot go wrong.

its 18 inch rims with 225/40/18 tires. It says 44 cold. I put it at 40 i think. Nothing wrong so far. I dont think they will blow if they say 44 cold and i do 44 cold. Thats what their rated for.
No loss to traction, no hydroplaning. never heard a chirp from them on turns. There is a lot of tire noise but that maybe due to my crappy wanlis. wear seems to be even but just a bit of negative camber.

it's usually recommended to set it at 80% of the max listed on the tire, and then adjust from there just a bit up or down depending on your liking...have a fun trip
