Tire recommendation for '01 CL

Had a close encounter with a curb and blew a tire yesterday. Questions:

Had a Firestone on there, which must've come with the car when I bought it 5 years ago. Don't want to spend too much. Can I get away with just replacing the one tire or do I need to buy a pair?

What would you recommend in the lower price range? Any brands to avoid? I see Kuhmos, Sumitomos, and Yokohamas all get decent reviews on tirerack.com.
Has anyone ever bought from them or other online sites?

Which shops do you like?

I'm in SoCal so weather's not an issue. Driving style = aggressive (for a girl). Low miles/year. Do drive winding mountain roads somewhat frequently.

Also, two rims need to be replaced. Any recommendations on best place to buy from?

Any thoughts appreciated.

What a good memory you have!

That's interesting, just learned of that tire today ... never heard of it before.
But I have 205/60/16s on there now. I'd have to replace all four if I changed out wouldn't I?

(I always assumed I had to stick with the same size tires that came with the car but I take it that's not so, given the monster truck I've seen in the neighborhood.)

Someone gave me a great price on BF Goodrich Advantages. Anyone have any experience with those?

You can replace tires as a pair, but if going with a different model tire then what is already on the car, its best to get all four.

The Hankooks are great tires, but they arent available in your stock tire size (Im assuming you dont have a Type S judging by the tire size). And sadly, they only have two options for 16s, which dont match the stock tire height so your speedometer would read faster then what you are actually doing.

If you stay with the stock size, these look like a good tire:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....L&autoModClar=

They have a great treadwear rating as well and they are less then $400 for all four.

Thanks, I'll see if I can find someone who has these locally.
Called around and what i've found so far is:

Falken zx 912
Bridgestone potenza g019
Sumitomo po1htr
BF Goodrich advantage ta
Eagle GT
Futura touring
definity vx700

My nephew, who used to work at a tire shop said if I was just getting one I might as well buy a used one. There's a local shop that sells them. Is that a bad idea?

Its an option, not one I would take though. Im whole-heartedly against running mismatched tires though.

I agree about getting a used tire if you plan to replace 1. Then you can just replace all 4 when the time comes. I've ran on used tires since I've gotten the car. I get good deals on great tires. Just make sure they are the same size and try to get the same model tire on the same axle if possible.

So now I'm told I need 3 new tires. One place tried to sell me 4 tires but the other places said I had one good Michelin (not Firestone, my bad) left and there was no reason I couldn’t keep it.

Couldn’t find the Yokohama locally, so I was about to buy the Goodrich Advantage when I heard him tell the mechanic to use the S-rated ... I know I have v-rated on there. When I stopped them, at first they tried to convince me the speed rating didn’t matter, but a friend had told me otherwise. (Am I right?) They didn’t have the BFGs in V-rating, so they tried to sell me Eagle GT’s for a little more but by that time I didn’t trust them. I walked away.

So I'm still driving on my donut and could use some input as I have to get tires today.

A local shop does have Hankooks but these are the ones they have:
Mileage Plus 8725, Optimo H418, H724 & 727. Are these are good as the Evo's?

A friend of mine also liked Sumitomos for his Alfa and a shop has a good price on their PO1 HTRs.

Or Uniroyal Tiger Paws, Federal Fermoza ... that's what I've turned up in stock, along with what I listed above.

Thoughts?

Also, I'm wondering about fuel efficiency? It's one thing I don't see rated on tirerack or other sites.

Really appreciate input!

order the Hankooks off of tirerack or ebay...All reviews says that is the best all around tire, hands down...
they are lightweight, sticky, and great in the rain, so its a win win situation..some of those other tires are heavy, slippery, and are loud when you drive, the hankooks are not...
There are other tires like yokohamas and bfg's that are good, but are waaaaay overpriced.....gl

here ya go:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....omCompare1=yes
or these at close out, same diameter as the others!!!

now dont say i didnt do anything for ya....lol...gl

225/50-16 is not the proper size, and the V12 evos arent available in anything that matches the OE size.

well she will not be able to get a good tire if she got the exact diameter on there, dont you agree?

plus, the stock 16's are only 6.5" wide, so a 225 is the widest she can go, and the the overall difference is only about a 1/2" difference smaller, which a lot of the guys, including me, run...even the 205/55r16 is the same diameter as the 225/50 and maybe even a better fit on the rim...Goodyear f1's for 75 is a steal

those Eagle Gt's he tried to sell you are okay tires, so if the price is good, go with that if you wanna get them locally

I'd rather have it match the stock OE size then get a "good tire". Reviews are pretty subjective. I ran a set of hankooks and they squealed around corners.

pb06: Not sure where you live but check out sam's club, walmart, america's/discount tire too. They can price match the same size and model tire if they have it in stock with online (plus shipping of course). Also I think Big O (not sure if your in the west) has 150 dollar rebates. Pep boys also runs a lot of tire rebates and promos.

Speed rating doesn't matter much at all. As long as you plan to stay below 100 mph, your good. Just get a nice, name brand tire and you should be set. Heck I have a pair of michelin's on right now and they ride nice and quiet.

Alternative to the Hankook's are the Yokohama S.Drive 205/55R-16 91W BW.
I was going to buy these before I bought the Hankook V12.
Both are good tires. Just remember....both are soft tires so depends on how much you drive and how hard will depend on how long they will last you.

When comparing tires you need to take a look at the Uniform Tire Quality Grading (UTQG). Traction, Treadwear, and Temperature as well as Speed Rating.

http://drive2.subaru.com/OnlineX_TireRatings.htm

If you want to get a deal on wheels and tires or just tires...swing by King's Tires in El Monte. Their located on Baldwin Ave (just south of the railroad tracks) & Valley Blvd. Ask for Junior (he's the owner), he'll hook you up. You can order any tire you want and not be pressured.

I'm in SoCal &t there's no Walmart or Sam's Club near me.
There's a Discount Tires, Goodyear, and Firestone & smaller shops. Pep Boys only has brands I don't know -- Cooper, Futura ...

The Sumitomos get 4 stars on tirerack and have a treadwear of 480AA, 8+ traction ratings etc. Comparable to Eagle GTs but trust the shop more. I take it no one's tried them?

On tirerack, best rated in my size/price is Kumhos but can't find them locally.
