sumitomo tires?????
anyone using these, good/bad - would like to hear about them
i saw them on the tire rack, i'll probably only put around 6,000 more miles on the cl before the lease is up, i was ok with the michelins, they were quiet, but i'm not gonna go for that expensive of a tire to turn it in off lease, i saw tire rack has the sumitomos at a very cheap price, but most times you get what you pay for, i noticed that the gaps between the tread might lead to some tire noise, that is the one thing i can say about the sock tires, smooth and quiet, my other alternatives was maybe the dunlop sport sp9000's

guji2 - The Kumho ECTSA 712 Supras that you mention are ultra high performance tires. The Sumitomo HTR+ is an all-season ultra high performance tire. These tires are in different classes and to compare them would be unfair.

I know that one person said they had wear problems and their tire was out of round (balance problems), but otherwise the reports of these tires have been rock-solid. Look at the reviews on Tirerack.com.
Mine have only been on a few months, so no review on longevity yet...

I did think about this issue. There are no tires (that I could find) in the stock size except the OEM Michelin MXM4 that has the appropriate load rating for the Type S. This was part of the impetus for me to upsize my rim so I could fit a 235/45-17 tire within spec. A variety of tire options are available in the 235 series size.
I know that many have mounted the 235 series tire out of spec on the 7" wide stock rim without any issue whatsoever, but I didn't want something as important as a tire to be out of spec. I just that kind of person.
I don't get the laod factor for this type of car. I mean the 93 - 91 load factor differnce. I've never had over 800 lbs in my car at one time and usually it carries less than 400. What difference does the 91 -93 difference make unless you're carrying well over 1000 lbs or have I got the whole issue wrong???

Interestingly enough, the Premium model recommends a 91 load rated tire and the Type S recommends a 93. The manual transmission Type S is the lighest in weight of all the second generation CL by about 60#. To me this implies the load recommendation has to do with something more then cargo capabilites alone. Remember, the Type S has a different (supposedly tighter) suspension then the Premium model, and many of us have stiffened it more with aftermarket upgrades. I'm guessing that this heavy car with a stiffened suspension performs better with a stiffer/stronger tire.
Of course the difference between a 91 and a 93 rated tire is not that extreme and I doubt those running a 91 tire will have any issues or problems.
The Sumitomos in 235/45-17 are 93 load rated, but are not XL rated tires with re-enforced casings like the OEMs. The only other tires I can find with XL ratings are Toyo T1S and Pirelli PZero Nero, both in the same 235/45-17 size.
